The Harbour development, following shortly after the go-ahead given by Euracan to build a major pulp mill, means strong economic growth in this part of the province. Kitimat obviously will boom, But eventhe most addled economist must 5e@ a corresponding economic explosion for the whole area, CNR fs already Studing ways to channel goous from as far east as Saskatchewan through to Kitimat, The total complex means more people, and more money, it doesn’t need a crystal ball to predict a growing link between Kitimat and Terrace, nor the fact that Terrace must be considered as 4 major base for industries seeking rail and harbor outlets to market eoods overseas, The trouble with economic explosions is that they do not wait for people to develop a suitable frame of mind, The current developments at Kitimat prasent an opportunity for the district of Terrace to more jobs, Quiet, please, Mr. Gordon Skeena MP Frank Howard, writing from the lower section of this week's editorial page, feels that the Liberal Cabinet Minister Walter Gordon was unjustly silenced by Prime Minister Pearson. The Pearson gag, applied in acabinet meeting, followed some hot and strong criticism of the ‘US policy in Vietnam by the outspoken Mr, Gordon, Frank Howard contends that Mr. Gordon should have heen dismissed from the Cabinet if drastic measures needed to be taken, but that he should not be silenced, Mr, Gordon’s maverick brand of Politics is Perhaps a needed ingredient in a hodge-podge cabinet: his dismissal may have durther divided the Liberal Party, . Rut the lesser measure, of telling him to. move into the mainstream of Progress in British Columbia. But i€ fs an opporlunity, passport to prosperity, We have to forget the old myth of. being a frontier communily of cowboys and rugged plon- eers, remote from all that city hustle and bustle, . The time has come for Terrace to speak to the rest of the province, to make a statement of Intent, to grow and to receive more citlzens, Instead of a plaintive walling for new business to come to the area so that the tax bill may be pald, we have to hear strong, positive arguments as to why it would bea major advantage to establish industries in this area, We have to hear if from our elected represen- tatives in the provincial legislature and the federal parllament, trom the Chamber of Com- merce, the service clubs and the Municipal Council, Terrace must come out of its coccoon with some imaginative and intelligent public relations, We have the potential in our citizens, the op- portunity ts here, We can't afford to Tet it pass, not a gift-wrapped policy of the Cabinet, does not seem to he extreme, Canada already has 4 minority government. Should Mr, Gordon continue to Speak so directly as a “private citizen,'’ we shall also be re- duced to a minority cabinet, We agree that for the good of the country and for a breath of honesty and courage in political lite, members of parliament should cross party Unes and vote and comment on issues according to their conscience, But a cabinet minister has 4 stronger com-" mitment to the Government, He is a public citizen, His statements, no matter how qualit. ied, must Inevitably be taken as the thinking of the government, It Is possible, although dublous, that Mr. Pears son has a Vietnam policy EY Mistée CAPR THAT's NO WAY To S ADDRESS 4 MEMBER OF THE OPPOSITE SEX im Bi - THEYRE SUPPOSED To BE TREATED WITH fe : COURTESY AN CONSIDERATION T KNOW, I KNOW ~ BUT YERVE A.
