Using the pretext of the shooting of a young man who tried to cross the wall divid- ing East and West Berlin, the gang, who numbered a few’ hundred in most of their de- monstrations, hurled rocks and insults at East German border guards and Soviei sen- tries who travel by bus to West Berlin each day to stand guard at the cementery of Red Army men who fell fight- ing fascism in World War II. A few days before the August 13 anniversary of the closing of the border, the German Democratic Republic warned that several under- ground organizations in West Berlin were planning attacks against Berlin border instal- lations. An official of the GDR Ministry of State Security on August 10 warned that one body known as the “German Liberation Front” was plan- ning attacks against the Ber- lin wall over the next few days. This group is led by Erwin Schoenborn, a former S.S. officer. It has been revealed that Schoenborn is extremely ac- tive in the neo-fascist move- ment in Europe and is linked with fascists in England. On the very eve of the at- tacks on the border wall West German President Luebke ar- rived in West Berlin saying he wanted to be in Berlin on the first anniversary of the border closure. This was séen as a gesture giving moral support to the pro-Nazi ele- ment. A warning that the pro- vocations were being planned at the border came a few days before the anniversary from the Soviet Union. In a note to the U.S., Brit- ish and French governments, the Soviet Union called at- tention of the Western powers to the intensification of pro- vocative acts from West Ber- lin against the GDR, the Soviet Union and other soc- ialist states. It warned that See BERLIN, page 8 Urge Dief oppose Common Market at Commonwealth conference. “Prime Minister Diefen- baker can serve the true national interests of Can- ada at the Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Confer- ence only if he uses this occasion to oppose the Common Market and all steps to enlarge it.” This was the opening state- ment in a press release issued. this week by the National Executive of the Communist Party of Canada, in com- menting on the forthcoming conference of Common- wealth Prime Ministers sche- duled to open in London September 10. The statement continues: “He should make clear that Canada will follow a con- structive, independent trade policy in our own national interests. “The British Tories are committed completely to ‘the’ intensification of the cold war, and hope to strengthen their position in the fierce competition for what is left of the capitalist world mar- ket. They are pressing for admission to the European Common Market. “The European Common Market is an organization of West European big business dominated by the West Ger- man trusts, and encouraged by United States imperial- ism. It is the economic coun- ter-part of NATO, the mili- tary alliance directed against the socialist countries. “It is designed to main- tain economic colonialism in the new countries which have recently gained politi- cal independence, keeping these countries as sources of cheap raw materials, and holding back their industrial development. It is directed against the living standards of the peoples of its member countries. ENDANGER MARKETS “In following their plans to join the Common Mar- ket, the British Tories are prepared to drastically down- grade the importance of their former trading relations with the Common wealth, While these relations were originally designed primar- ily to. provide Great Britain with sources of raw mater- ials and foods, they have See OPPOSE ECM, page 3. e ey mB aoviest fallout has allch tt Lake City, Utah, Ml Ra crding to the Fed- atters Adiation Council, re- dich 0 ~~ micromicuries Sep ae Six times the dan- dt Mint 2 liter of milk. jut nhesota state agri- ged °fficials have ini- - Staz, PTOgram in which aS for Would pay farmers t's ea Produced from ® ; ch are storage-fed. i _ Milk from cows: » the Pasture fed.
