Bain, Dominion fruit and vege- table inspeetor, should be very encouraging to all settlers in the Skeena River valley. Of all the government men who have been | in this country in the past ten or more years, Mr, Bain is probably the most efficient. He knows his business very thoroughly and he makes a very thorough examina- tion of everything connected with agriculture and horticulture. His first look at this part of the coun- try impressed him and he immedi ately inquired why there was not more settlement. His investiga- tions proved to him that the gov- ernments, land setHement board and immigration departments had overlooked the best bet in ‘the north. He examined the govern- the soil and the vegetation, as well as the growing crops and the various wild and cultivated fruits. His conclusion was that, with one or two exceptions, there was nothing in the southern part of the prov- ince that could compare with the New Hazelton and Skeena River distriet for mixed farming,. gar- dening, fruits; ete.
