this summer

THE PROVINCIAL government has expanded its budget
for summer youth employment in the northwest.

As many as 233 positions can be subsidized this year, a
substantial increase over the 168 created last year, says
Sandy Bullock from Northwest Community College who
is managing the program.

And that is nearly double the 117 jobs created two years
ago, she added.

Some of the increase comes from changes the province
has made to its Youth Options B.C. program. in. that last
year, high school as well as post secondary students be-
came eligible.

This year, says Bullock, students who graduated from a
post secondary institution as of Sept. 1997 but who have
had trouble finding work now qualify.

“We're getting lots of inquiries, It’s a busy time,’’ said
Bullock.

For businesses, the program provides a subsidy of 50 per
cent of a person’s wage up to a maximum of $4 an hour.

Bullock noted that last year, the average wage paid stu-
dents by employers was $9.45 an hour.

Her territory covers the area from the Queen Charlotte
Islands to Houston, down to Kitimat and up to the Yukon
border.

Last year two students were hired by Bullock to help
with the program. This year, because of the increase in
subsidized positions, she’s hired three people.

Ir the meantime, the federal government’s youth
employment program deadline for applications closed last
Friday.

Human Resources Development Canada official Karen
Wienberg said the budget hasn’t been determined yet but it
will be tight.

‘We have more people apply than we have money,’’ she
said.

That program offers a subsidy of 50 per cent of the wage
up to $3.58 an hour — half of the minimum wage — for
businesses.

Non profit groups can get $7 an hour and have Canada
Pension Plan and EI costs covered. .
