- Second ice sheet | tops among those surveyed in city A SECOND ARENA was the single most frequently requested recreation facility in a survey of local people conducted by the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission. The surveys, which represent 6.7 per cent of Terrace area households, point to a sec- ond sheet of ice as the top choice of the largest number of respondents. But also frequently mentioned were a community centre, convention centre, Tecreation centre and youth centre. The commission bundled those ‘‘uses’”” together on the basis that they could alt be housed under one roof, Taken together, requests for those facilities was greater than for a second Sheet of ice. : That has formed the basis for a recom- mendation of the commission that the city build a multiplex housing those uses and a second sheet ofice. “*We believe people have different names for the same facilities,’ says city patks and recreation superintendent Steve Scott. - Commission chairman Art Erasmus said the survey respondents generally agreed that the facility should be in the area of the existing arena. “Quite a large number of people have mentioned the need for hiking trails, biking trails, walking trails and greem space,’’ Erasmus added, : He noted “‘trails”’ finished a strong third behind a new arena and a recreation com- plex. . He said that amounts to a strong endorse- ment of the wark already underway by the city planner to develop a master plan for trails, bike paths and greenways as part of the next Official Community Plan. : The commission also recommended de- Yelopment of connected tails and comple- tion of more parks and playing ficlds. ‘It also recommended that a swimming pool expansion be considered after the multi-purpose facility. : Erasmus brings experience from Prince George, where an arts and cultural contre was shot down by sports groups, leading to divisions in the community about what to build. In the end the city agreed to a priority list of building several projects — including both sports and arts centres ——- over a num- ber of years. “The community approved spending of far more money and because it was a com- prehensive plan it seemed to be more ac- ceptable than saying we're spending this on just one thing,”’ Erasmus said. The surveys also give clues as to how much money Terrace residents are willing to pay for such a project. Sixty-eight per cent of respondents said they’d be willing to $50 or more extra cach year on their taxes. , ‘ “Quite a large number of people have mentioned the need for hiking trails, biking tralls, walking trails and green space.” Close to 60 per cent said they’d be will- ing to make donations. But the number of people who were will- ing to pay as much as $100 or more — ¢i- ther through taxes or donation — was around 12 per cent, Number of survey respondents who named facility as one of the top four most needed facilities: arena: 278 recreation complex: 166 trails (hike/bike/walk): 152 pool: 106 youth centre: 96 skate board park: 9Z community/convention centre: 67 go eart track: 62 : : 59 baseball fields: 46 rainl golf: 43 roller blade park: 31 tennis courts: 29 racquet courts: 27 soccer fields: 25 theater: 25 laser tag: 25 «BC Cerlified Climber * Clean-up service available * Fully insured * Pruning «Topping 15% tor oct a 635-7400 Terrace Tree Trimming FALL TREE REMOVAL & PRUNING TERRACE Date: November 16, 1997 Time: 10:00 am Place: Gun Club -Large Bore Rifle ROD & GUN CLUB TURKEY | SHOOT Events: Shot gun Small Bore Rifle 2 ih rf Si : Foon ar You have a chance fo win great prizes when you try to put the puck in the net at Canada Safeway in Terrace only O Canuck Shirts O Pucks O Hats and More Everyone Wins!
