A2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 9, 1997 FROM FRONT FRBC expected to slash projects : “The ministry has cut it back so severely there won't be any restoration activities this year,” Bolin said. “It will be another phase of consultants preparing prescriptions for work to be dane next year or the year after that.” “There's going to be no displaced forest workers put back to work - there's no money init to pul people back to work." . As one of those consultants, Bolin says he’s sensitive to criti- cism that the FRBC money is simply being * ‘pissed away” in in plans that don’t get carried out. If the cuts are passed as outlined. he says critics will have al the more ammunition. “What benefit are these projects actually resulting in besides direct benefits for McElhanney?™ he asked. “It's to the point that you really wonder about the validity of the work that. we're doing.” - Triton Environmental Consultants’ Dave Gordon agrees that the cuts would dramatically reduce how effective the year’s work will be, “These are the priorily watersheds that have been put forward already,” he said. : Gordon said a multi-year strategic plan amounts to deferral of work that should be done now, THIS PICTURE by Brent Van Daele was one of nine drawings removed from a show at the R.E.M. Thomson said Piersdorff's logic doesn’t hold water. > “It's not an elementary schcol lobby, it is a theatre,” she ‘said, “And it has had nudes in it'before during festival.” : Thomson also said some of the work that remains hanging is “in her opinion more graphic than the ones that were removed. | : Faber called the move “censorship” and said he’s baffled “that the works would be judged offensive; “What kindof mes- “Kage are we going to send to‘our children? Van Daele said, explaining ‘he drew the woman twice on the same piece of paper. “I’m really disappointed. The other youths were treated and released from the hospital. Along with police aud coroner investiga- ‘tions, one will be conducted by the newly- created the children’s commissioner office. It was brought in last September, partly as a result of several high-profile deaths of children who were under the care of the provincial government. The powers of commissioner Cynthia Morton involve looking into the death of every person under the age of 19 in B.C., regardless of whether they were under the’ care of the government or not. Commissioner official David Valentine says the investigation is very thorough, and involves cooperation with police, the coroner’s office and the ministry of chil- dren and families. The minisiry’s role will be investigated, Valentine says, to make certain the youth was being properly looked after. ‘*We look at every aspect of that child’s life,’ Valentine says. ‘It’s a very rcgi- mented process.”’ Valentine says a public report on the in- vestigation should be available in about five months. The 16-year-old driver of the car, who cannot be identified under the Young OF fender’s Act, has been changed with dangerous driving causing death. He is to appear in Terrace court April 15.
