- The sudden death of Mrs, Maud Stehr on September 4th will mean a great loss to the labor move- ment and also to her many friends, especially in the Colling- wood and South Vancouver dis- tricts, where she had resided for many years, She was born in Coleraine, Londonderry, North Ireland, In her teens she studied stenography and shorthand and received a dip- loma for this work from the Royal Society of Arts in London, After Coming to Canada she worked in the law office of the late Judge McDonald in McLeod, Alberta, before he was elevated to the Bench, While working in Calgary she Met and married John Stehr in 1981, who was a student in en- gineering at that time, Up to this time Maud had been raised and educated in the most conser- Vative tradition, But the Hungry Thirties made her take a deep and penetrating look into the effectiveness of all the organiza- -tions and institutions she had | _ Served and faithfully supported, She found them wanting and totally impossible to solve the terrible problems of those years, An intensive study of political economy convinced her that her’ place was inthe Communist Party and she became an active member for 19 years, Her law office experience en- abled her to help in the trials of six unemployed voys charged Tribute to Maude Stehr on “Bloody Sunday.” She sat forfour days a week for several weeks taking notes at the trial, Her love for children was shown by the fact that she be- came a member of the Jubilee Summer Camp Committee and was always a willing worker until she developed a heart condition, She was a member of the Glad- stone PTA and also of the Nor- quay Ratepayers Association un- til itdissolved. During the Second World War she was an active member of the Housewives Lea- gue, Her home was always avail- able for any meetings of a pro- gressive nature, As her heart condition developed, she found it difficult to be active but she continued to the last to visit and express her convictions espec- ially regarding our need for peace to people and friends wherever she met them, Maud Stehr has passed away and the greatest tribute her many friends can pay her memory would be for them to step for- ward to fill the gap which she has left in the progressive move- . ment, We extend our deepest sympathy to her husband Jack Stehr and to her son and daugh- ter.
