The truth is that the Lower Mainland is like no other Canadian city. It has i1 rivers
flowing within the GVRD, where 200,000 salmon spawn each year and lay 30 million
eggs which contribute to a 2 billion dollar fishing industry. Can we afford to tamper

with this industry?

Local Health Officers have endorsed chloramine because it creates fewer THMs than
chlorine.

OUR ANSWER:
Indeed, a report by Health and Welfare Canada, titled "Risk Determination in the
Development of the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality" admits that,
" the true risk from THM by-products is not possible to estimate with any degree

with certainty."

THMs cause colorectal cancer. The statistics are that using chloramine may cause il more
deaths per million, as opposed to using chlorine, which may cause 56 more deaths per
million.

OUR ANSWER:
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, we have a 6.5% chance of contracting
colorectal cancer in our lifetime. That is, 63,000 people per million will develop

colorectal cancer. Now, in the worst case scenario for using chloramine, of 11 cases

the new total becomes 63,011, and for using chlorine the new total becomes 63,056.

An increase so minute as to be statistically and realistically irrelevant.

6. Chloramine is more cost effective.
