Dancers perform at riverside barbecue DYNAMIC DANCERS, vibrant costumes and hypnotic drum beats await when the Terrace Nisga’a dancers perform Saturday, Aug, 3 for Ri- verboat Days. The event will kick off at noon with a salmon barbecue at the Canadian Canoe Museum. The group’s director, Keane Tait-Stewart, says people can expect fresh juicy salmon from the Nass Valley, big salads and fried bread. The dancers will perform around 2:30 p.m. Stewart describes the performance as a mesmer- izing blend of music, singing and colour. “The drums are so powerful,” Tait-Stewart says, “It makes your bones rattle.” The Terrace Nisga’a dancers were originally formed to help urban Nisga’a retain their cultural and traditional identity. “Qur main focus is to teach people who live off the reserve cultural dancing and singing,” says Tait-Stewart. “We believe it is important to gain more knowledge of our ancestors.” The group, formed five yeats ago by Nisga’a from Kincolith; Greenville, Canyon City and Aiyansh, now- boasts more than 100 members. ‘old,” says Tait-Stewart. “We include everyone.” The group, also known as Gitlaxdax Sayt Kilim Goothl Nisga’a, is trying to raise money KEANE TAIT-STEWART and Peter McKay to go to the first annual International Aboriginal Festival, to be held in Vancouver Aug. 30-31 and Sept. 1.
