A12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 22, 1998 - They’re open to business WANT TO teach your em- ployees how to organize projects? Get your managers to communicate better? There’s a new school in town which wanls to help businesses. Called the Centre for Leadership and Technology, ihe non-profit osganization will acl as a broker, lining up training programs, semi- nars, even diploma courses. “Tf industry says we need a course in widget making, we'll sec who does that training, what are there references, look. at the course evaluations’ says centre manager Loma Morris. Overall the emphasis is on developing better manage- ment skills. The centre came out of a brainstorming session a few months ago, she says. The Kitimat skills centre had been approached by Al- can and other major in- dustries about offering courses for employees who live here. If industry needed ongo- ing training for employees, maybe others did, too. The Pacific Northwest Employment Training and Development Agency, (formerly Skeena Aboriginal Management Board) was also approached and agreed to provide money for the centre. There’s no other centre which offers this type of service, said Morris. The grand opening is April 24. z LORNA MORRIS and Barbara Haldane head up the new Centre for Leadership and Technology. The centre will act as a broker for business, lining up seminars and courses for employees. It’s lined up four main post-secondary institutions — Southern Alberta In- stitute of Technology in Calgary, UBC, University of Victoria and the Banff School of Management — to provide training. Morris emphasizes — that the cenlre won't offer gener- al computer training, or help for people on employment insurance, Instead the focus is business and First Na- tions. UVic is offering a First Nations band administration program through the centre in 1999. “People traditionally have to go elsewhere for these programs,’? says Mortis. ‘Now we can bring experi- ence here.’’ But she adds that when | appropriate, local expertise ~ will be used in courses and seminars. Trustees get options on saving tax money THE COAST MOUNTAINS SCHOOL board will look at three options to try and save money on district edministrators. The issue came up when assistant super- intendent Skip Bergsma announced he’d be retiring in August. The board’s key ad- consider. visory committee recommended Bergsma 1998. not be replaced until another commiltec ex- Mf ire amine whether the position’s duties could be divvied up. But Andrew Scruton, director of instruc- tion, was promoted to the jod. So now school board chair Roger Leclerc and superintendent Frank Hamilton are presenting trustees with three options to Set up a task group to look at restruc- turing — The group would meet with | teacher, parent, union and administrative Tepresentatives on finding organizational efficiencies. A report would be due Dec. 1, Scruton’s replacement; reorganize some district administrative responsibilities. BB Hire a consultant to review administra- tive structure — The consullant would have to meet with stakeholder groups. Trustees will likely make a decision on the three options at the May board meeting. Morris says the centre’s location is also helpful — they're localed on top of the Toc Com building on Keith., Features include modem computer setups with Inter- net links, a satellite connec- tion and a large conference room, An incredible carving by Cliff Bolton dominates that room -—~ he donated it to the centre. Local business will be the - force that determines what the centre offers, says Morris. She wants to stric- ture timetables and course lengths around their needs. Morris can see the Centre for Leadership and Technol- ogy becoming a draw for businesses around the north. Corporations in Prince Rupert are already phoning with questions, she says. She predicts the centre should be operating in the clear in 18 months at the latest. Proceeds after that will go into developing the centre or making courses cheaper, A volunteer board of directors has yet to be selected, but that should come soon. 4%,» Toten’s Countrywide Furniture 4. con La-Z-Boy Gallery hh & Opening May 8 | aa” a We're still the lowest at Now is the time to save!
