Space ae Assault increases concern police The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 27, 1996 - Ag Crime on the increase within the city THE CRIME rate in the city of the Ter- race is On the rise. Statistics from the provincial attomey- general’s ministry indicate Terrace was 18th in 1995 among B.C. municipalities. The year before we were 20th. There were 187 criminal code offenses "for every 1,000 people in the city last year — that’s up from 169 the year be- fore. These numbers though, are only in- dicators of crimes which happen within the city limits. Provincial numbers for rural areas havé nat yet been compiled. Terrace RCMP Staff Sgt. John Veld- man says the numbers are not that im- portant, but admits it would be nice to see them reduced, , For the tenth year in a row, the Terrace city crime rate remains above the provin- cial average. In 1995 that number was 147 crimes per 1,000 people, while the year before it was 150 crimes, But looking a1 the larger picture, the Terrace numbers alone arc much more favourable now than they were ten years ago. From 1986 until 1990 the crime rate numbers were consistently over 200, In 1988 that number was 232, placing Terrace second in the province. And with the exception of 1993, when there were 213 crimes per 1,000 people, those numbers have dropped off sig- nificantly, The number of Criminal Code offences was up last year though. There were 2,436 Criminal Code offenses here in 1995, That’s up from 2,138 the year be- fore. AIRFARE FOR TWO TO The increase can be accounted for when considering some specifics such as assaults and break and enters. There were 257 assaulis reported in Terrace in 1995, up marginally from 246 the year before. And the number of break and enters was up from 15210194,” Veldman says those two offences are among the mounties’ biggest concerns. And he adds one message RCMP ‘are continually uying to hammer home is ane-of personal security... -- He says many people are still leaving their vehicles unlocked, offen to find that thieves are quick 10 take advantage. ‘People have to start being responsible and ‘helping us out,’’ Veldman says. “(We can’t do the jab alone.”’ He says the work load for RCMP of- ‘ ficers is increasing, while personnel numbers are decreasing, “We're being WIN A TRIP WITH AIR BC AND THE TERRACE STANDARD IN = __ 1 maa ANYWHERE IN B.C. WHERE AIR B.C. FLIES STANDARD I FIND THE 10 FACES HIDDEN THROUGHOUT THIS forced to do more with less,’” he says. There were 10 robberies in the city last year, compared with 13 the year before. Five police officers were assaulted in Terrace in 1995, compared with three in ” 1994. And there were 35 sexual assaults reported last year, 23 of them resulting in charges being laid. There were 30 Teported sexual assaults the year before and 30 of those cases resulted in charges. ~ Other statistics include complaints of disturbing the peace, which jumped sharply, There were 334 such complaints last year, up from 210 in 1994, Drug related offenses were up slightly; from 91 in 1994, to 94 last year. One.very encouraging statislic for the RCMP is the huge decrease in the num- ber of impaired charges over the past: couple of years. : Last year there were only 60 charges laid. That’s down from 102 the year be- fore, and 148 in 1993, “The counterattack program is quite Successful,”’ says Veldman, These things have been hilling home insurance wise. People’s livelihoods are at stake,”’ In considering the overall picture, Veldman says he thinks most people feel Terrace is a safe place to live, “But we probably feel safer than we should,” he says. ‘‘We become com- placent in our litte community,” Overall statistics for the province show a three per cent crime rate drop in 1995 conipared to 1994, However, the number of criniinal code offences was up by over 3,000. Last year there were 449,587 such acts caried out, compared to 446,266 the year before, ~ SHAPE UP! Summer's Not Far Off...
