Page G2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 9, 1993 | Icy August is certain! August: a time when most people think in terms of strapping on water skis, not lacing up ice skates. But that’s just what up to 300 youngsters will be doing as they prepare to hit the ice at the sixth annual Terrace Summer Hockey Schooh |. a Spokesman Jake DeJong said 284 kids took advantage of the opportunity last year and that sort of turnout is expected this time. They will be split into four age groups: up to eight years, 9-10 years, 11-12s and 13 years and up. DeJong said the ages in last year’s enrolment ranged from five to 16. On hand to pass on their know!- edge and skills will be eleven in- structors including Wade Flaherty and Jeff Sharples. Teammates with the Kansas City Blades, the San Jose Shark International League farm team, both have also seen National Hockey League action. ~. Flaherly has stepped between the pipes for the Sharks while Sharples patrolled the blue fine for the Detroit Red Wings. Add in Shane Maitland, Jason Kmg, Tony Hildebrand, Ian Al- those present get both on- and off-ice tuition in the game's finer points. The school also offers after- hours game action each nighi, DeJong pointed out. Anyone aged 16 years and up can sign up for the summer “These guys have got to stay in shape. They can't sit around all summer.” Jake DeJong. ger, Trevor Hendry, Mario Des- _jatdins, Davey Jones, Rod Philpot and Simon Dodd and there’s little doubt the kids are going to learn a lot. The recreational league offers adulls a chance to enjoy the non- contact version. The cost in both cases is $30 _per week and again players can register for either or both. While these games are enjay- able for instructors like Flaherty, DeJong pointed out there’s a serious side to them as well, thing “These guys have got to slay i in. f- _ Shape,’ be explained. The work °. involved in teaching and playing actual games effeclively acted as a training program for the in- structor/players. If there wasn’t that opportunity in their home town, he added, they would have to spend their summers where they had an op- portunity to keep up the neces- sary level of fitness. . Flaherty, for example, would be putting in two weeks work at Vic- toria just prior to the Terrace school. “These guys just can’t sit around all summer,’ DeJong said, And siiling around is not some- the. hockey school participants will get a chance to do either.
