Noonan, O.M.I. 4830 Straume Ave. 635-2313 Amateur loggers risk injury TERRACE — Amateur or Sunday loggers ‘in B.C. risk their lives when they cut down trees near power lines. ‘For their own safety, we ask people not to cut down trees ‘around power lines by themselves,” said Bob Balbirnie, B.C. Hydro service planner in Ter- race. ‘‘Electrocution can occur even if a branch hanging on the line is touched.” In past incidents, tree fallers have been injured and power outages have affected large numbers of customers. It is important to. remember that the wood in trees has a high moisture content and isa good conductor of elec- tricity. This is often the case even when the wood appears to be dry. Anybody felling trees should be aware that contact between a tree and a power line can result in electricity travelling down the tree and into the ground. While the charge on the ground is reduced as the distance from the tree in- creases, an individual yenturing near the tree can still receive a shock through each foot ossibly resulting in in- jury. . . . a These are Hydro’s policies regarding trees néar either power lines or the service wires between Hydro’s poles and a customer's home: If a tree appears in danger of falling or be- ’ ing blown onto & power jine, Hydro will take it down at no charge. If an owner wishes to take down a healthy tree near a line, Hydro will provide a lineman to stand by if reasonable notice is given. There will be-no charge during normal working hours, but a charge will be made if the service is requested outside regular hours. If a tree is felled through a power line with no lineman standing by, full cost of repairs will be charged. Disposal of felled trees is the responsibility of the owners.
