JAMES STARK, PRESIOENT : TEL. 613-722-6001 August 3, 1984 COUNCIL is Traboulay, Mayor M ity of Port Coquitlam G 2272 McAllister Ave. 27 1984 PORT COQUITLAM, B.C. V3C 2a8 Dear Mayor Traboulay: Enclosed is a copy of a letter I received recently from my good friend Art Eggleton, the Mayor of Toronto. In it, he outlines the reasons why he asked his council to support the concept of a mutual and verifiable nuclear weapons freeze, and the reasons why his council welcomed and voted for this idea. .Also enclosed are copies of the brochure we prepared in June for citizens interested in the freeze concept, and a copy of the resolution endorsed by Toronto City Council. I am writing this letter in the hope that you will ask your council to consider adopting a similar resolution in support of the nuclear freeze. If you could do so before the September 4 election, we feel it would encourage our national leaders to add the name of Canada to the growing list of nations (128 to date) who have supported the freeze proposal (copy of U.N. freeze resolution enclosed). We really are at an historic crossroads, and it is quite a moving experience to realize that the nuclear arms race may well be "frozen" within the next several years. But the freeze is by no means an "inevitability" yet, and much remains to be done. What I am asking is that you and your council become part of the process that is leading to the achievement of the freeze. Please photocopy this letter and enclosures and distribute them. to the members of your council, so that they can evaluate our request and determine their individual responses. And please be sure to let us know what action is taken by your council so that we can report how many municipalities have joined in. Thank you very kindly for your time and consideration. I hope to hear back from you as soon as possible. Yours sincerely, ‘ te T. James Stark President enel. TJSshjw
