“TERRACE — The city kicked off the B.C. Heart Foundation’s annual fund raising drive last Monday by proclaiming Febru- ary as ‘Heart Month” and rais- ing the Heart Foundation flag at city hall. in making a request for this - official recognition, Karen Enri- quez, President of the Terrace unit of the B.C.-Yukon Heart Supreme Court decision — continued from page 1 em: necessarily bad. She explained that the law ‘‘wasn’t workable’ and neither side was happy with it. According to Brophy, the law stated that an abortion was an acceptable form of medical treatment if the life or the ‘thealth”’ of the mother was en- dangered. ‘‘And health means everything from psychological peace, to emotional peace, to high blood pressure,” she said. ‘*There were very few vetos on therapet:..c abortions”. “Now I’m hoping we can create some new legislation that will give better protection to the unborn,” said Brophy. ‘You can’t totally eliminate a whole group of the population like the unborn from any kind of legal protection.’’ ; . Brophy said she agrees with Premier Vander Zalm’s stand on the issue. No provision of medical coverage for abortions done without committee ap- - proval and outside the hospital system is ‘‘the safe thing to do’’, Brophy said, and expressed a belief that the status quo will continue in B.C. — at least for the'time being. ~ But, she said, like it or not, the federal government is going to have to address the issue even- tually. “Politically it’s really a dif- ficult issue and politicians are not going to be allowed to sit on the fence,’’? Brophy said. “They're going to have to come down on one side or the other on where they stand, and their political hides are going to ride along with it.” “T think that there’s going to be lots more lively debate and there’s going to be lots of peo- ple, I hope, really taking a better look at where they have stood in -the past, or where they haven’t even given it any thought. _ Perhaps they will begin to search their minds and their hearts for what is the truth for them in this issue.” ‘However, with regards to ‘lively debate’, Brophy said she doesn’t believe the Supreme Court decision and the possibili- ty of freestanding abortion clinics throughout the country wili Jead to increased or violent confrontations between Pro- Life and Pro-Choice groups. She did point out however, that — abortion is an emotional issue on both sides of the fence and because both groups were very large and contain a broad spec- trum of the population, the possibility of violence has always existed. ‘We are radically opposed to using violence in any way what- soever to stop the violence on the unborn. It would be totally hypocritical.’’ But she added, “You have extremists in every inovement. Neither side can say they're free of anger and hostili- ty. It’s very complex.”’ In the event a clinic opened locally, Brophy said, ‘‘We would do the same thing that we have always done. Try to educate people as to what the reality of abortion is... ty to 24 Terrace Review — Wednesday, February 3, 1988 oo Activities announc Foundation, wrote to city coun- cil recently and said, ‘‘This longstanding tradition linking the month of February and the work of the Heart Foundation should, we feel, be reinforced in the minds of our citizens since this is the time of our most con- centrated fund raising efforts.” Terrace Heart Foundation Coordinator Betty Campbell reach out to women who are burdened with an’ unwanted child to help them to bear their child with the support of the community.”’ “We would hope that we would be able to offer them whatever they needed to brighten the term of their pregnancy. It’s just ex- cellent. It’s a victory for women.’” This was the reaction of Ter- race Pro-Choice spokesperson Maureen Bostock when she was asked for her view on the recent Supreme Court decision. “It’s going to very much be something that will evolve 1 think over the next 12 months,”’ she said, but predicted ,‘Certain- ly there will be a clinic in Van- _ said several events, including a . door-to-door canvas, an awareness display at Skeena Mall and a ‘“‘Hearts, Flowers and Fashions”’ dinner have been planned forthe month. The most: exciting of these, she said, will be the ‘‘Hearts, Flowers and Fashions’’ dinner scheduled for tomorrow night at the Bavarian Inn at 7 p.m. ampbell said that for $22, : the evening includes: dinner, - door prizes, a Leisure Fashion Show by Lady.Footlocker and a. - demonstration of fresh and silk flower arranging by Central Flowers, Grace Fell Florists and Flowers a la Carte. She said the floral arrangements will be auc- tioned off during the evening. All proceeds from the event go couver almost immediately. There’s already an organization that has been active for the last year working on fundraising to be able to set up, so I think we will see that right away.”’ But as far as a local clinic was concerned, she said the future was more uncertain; nothing is expected to change right away. If there is a lack of services, the B.C. government will have to accept the blame, stated Bostock, and called the govern- ment’s reaction ‘appalling’. “The method of delivery of services was a piece of the issue with the Supreme Court deci- sion,” she explained, ‘‘and the Supreme Court has said that the . therapeutic abortion committees are no longer legal in this coun- try as a method of restriction. I think that in society in general, the recognition is that the abor- tion clinic is the most effective way of delivering the service and hospitalization is an unnecessary aspect of it.”’ Bostock said she expects the B.C. Medical Association ‘‘to risé up in arms against the government because doctors -know what is a medical service and what is not.” ‘‘And I expect a good fight from them,’ she added, ‘and certainly of course we will be fighting as well. There is going to have to be direct work in that area for the next few months.’’ As far as legalized abortion is concerned, Bostock believes the battle is.over — unless the federal government attempts to re-introduce abortion law. She added that, based on the U.S. -expérience following legalized abortion, Pro-Life forces could also remain in the picture. a ‘There are many levels at which these kinds of fights take place and I don’t expect that the next few years will be easy ones, but I think that we’re at least working within a_ legal framework,” she said. _cigarette smoking. chased at Central “Flowers, Grace Fell Florists, Flowers a la Carte, the Bavarian Inn and Lady Footlocker, or from Karen Enriquez by phoning 638-0487 - or Betty Campbell at 638-8464: An educational display. at.
