AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 4, 2000 CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Ba Bears deserve a lot better than what they now get Dear Sirs: I was a bit surprised and taken aback by Rob Brown's column in the Sept. 20 issue of The Terrace Standard re- garding the death of a little boy after suffering the injur- ies of a bear attack. And 1] was also a bit disappointed, ] am not undermining the extent of such a tragedy nor can I even imagine the pain of that poor family at their loss. However, this is bad timing for such an column. I found the tone a bit sensational. Fall is not a good time of the year for our bears in this town. They are al- ready under the gun, no pun intended, and have already suffered a bad rap. I] felt Mr. Brown's column could trig- ger a bear witch hunt message to an already a trigger- happy group. . This is bear country and bear attacks have occurred and will occur, But this is also a place that boasts itself as being "Super Natural". Look at the logo on the li- cence plates. Think of the money generated from the tourist trade, enticing people who have never seen wild- life (bear included) to experience such a thing. Look around this town and see how many bear promos you come across. Bears everywhere, Bear postcards, bear posters. And our town symbol is what? a bear! Hey, good thing it would seem that his colour is the right colour. What is that? Some racial insinuation? Right, white fur is the right fur to have, it would seem. Will Methanex stay or not? Dear Sir: I wonder if Methanex is planning to remain in Kiti- mat in spite of any or all of the concessions at may re- ceive, When Methanex built in Chile, Albertan employecs | were laid off. According to a news release, Methanex purchased and then closed a Texas methanol plant. Now that the U.S.A. is purchasing Canadian natural gas we all pay more. When natural gas was cheaper, Methanex profited. Gas is cheaper in Chile and it may be enticing to move there. Chile may offer cheaper production and labour while regulating this industry loss. The Chilean government may be offering incentives encouraging a move. Whatever occurs, it is apparent that Methanex em- ploys an invaluable public relations officer. C. Delmarque, Terrace, B.C. I have a soft heart for our wildlife and I have read too many poaching stories and read about too much abuse of our natural resources to not feel for those bears, At this time of the year, they cannot marched into Safeway and buy a fish or provisions of canned goods for the long winter ahead, This is what bears do! Yes; we have bears around this place and yes, there are people with problems understanding the deal about putting their garbage away. And yes, tragedies do occur among all species, But how many bear deaths at the hands of humans and how many human deaths at the hands (paws) of bears?. What is the ratio? What are the stats? The conservation officers should look at this govern- ment and at their minisiry and ask to dig a little deeper for money for new computers, new phones, new vehi- cles, new high tech gadgets? I don't know about that. But ask for monies for better relocation programs. Don't shoot the cubs. Aren't they innocent, too in their being just baby bears? Find the zoos. Find the kind shel- ters like the ones in the Bulkley Valley who help the cubs so that they have a chance at being bears. Aren't the States running out of bears yet? Allow for relocation. Who speaks for the bears? L. Chaput, Terrace, B.C. No ifs, ands or butts about this Dear Sir: Looks like we went for a horse and buggy ride. I wrote a time ago about the Old Man and the buggy and the information I used I got right from the horse’s mouth { the horse also wants a union rate, a ten-minute grain break, double time for trotting, and a pension plan) so to speak. I have since been spoken to by several city councillors and some staff members, each with a different story. But the bottom line is that the Old Man still has the licence, if he cares to use it. Which just goes to show that we must be care- ful what we get from the horse’s mouth, or run the tisk of looking like the horse’s butt, and that’s not the most intelligent part of the horse. Les Watmough, Terrace, B.C, (Mr. Watmough is referring to an earlier letter he wrote concerning the city’s suspension of a business licence for Dave Penner, the person who provided buggy rides each Saturday at the farmers’ market.)
