The company failed to find a buyer for its mill last year, lead- ing it to turn back the licence to the provincial government, Forests minister Dan Miller said the wood will be tumed into a limber supply area and will be al- located after the province’s chief forester establishes a new annual allowable cut. The old cut was 110,000 cubic mictres a year, Westar and the province agreed to cancel claims each had laid against the other. _ The province said Westar still had ta do some silviculture work and road maintenance on the licence. Westar gave the forest service inventory and other infonnation in exchange for wiping out the above obligations. Miller called the exchange a ““wash’’ in order to gain informa- Wrong word TERRACE — An error in a quote attributed to Premier Mike Harcourt in a March 3 story sub- stantially altered its meaning. The quote read: “I’m not ad- verse (to a buy-in) but we are a bit gun shy. We’ve just written off $300 million in band loans from the previous Social Credit government.” It should have read: ‘I’m not adverse (to a buy-in) but we are a bit gun shy. We've just written off $300 million in bad loans fram the previous Social Credit government,” ¥ tion that will quickly lead to a new annual allowable cut, Westar had wanted cash in return for roads and bridges it built in the area and for inventory information, .. The company will. now close the mill permanently, paying nearly $800,000 in severance to the approximately 100 people who once worked there, Wocd to be allocated will prob- ably come under the forest ser- vices’s small business program, said a forest service official. The new timber supply area lies . within territory claimed by the Nisga’a and by the Gitanyow (formerly Kitwancool). Miller said he ‘will entertain proposals by the two groups ‘‘if they approach it in a cooperative Spirit,” And he raised the possibility of having the old Kitwanga mill tuned into a plant to produce valuc-added wood products. There’s now word yet on what Westar wants to do with the old mill site. Westar’s surrender officially ends its involvement in the Hazeltons. Burdened with a large debt and a bad mix of mill technology versus wood supply, the company put all of its assets on the market last year. Its Carnaby mill, whole log chipper at New Hazelton and wood licence were sold to Repap in 1992. THE Bavarian Inn Restaurant The friendilest “Inn” town!
