+8 "THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM (* 0 U \, {> MEMORANDUM nl JUN 19 1978 TO: Mayor and Council . June 16th, 1978 FROM: Public Works Committee Report from the Public Works Committee Meeting held Thursday, June 15th, 1978 at 3:45 p.m. IN ATTENDANCE: Alderman E.W. Mabbett F.E. Peters G.W. Ulmer L. Melnechenko (part of the time) ITEM I Re: Coquitlam - Oxford Intersection The Committee reconsidered the accident problem at the Coquitlam - Oxford Intersection. Traffic counts taken during the past. week were available and indicated that traffic patterns were not very much different from the traffic count taken in August of last year. There has been a general increase in all directions and the peak hour traffic flow in the north direction has increased considerably. Two possible actions which might reduce the accident rate were considered. One possibility would be to paint STOP Ahead signs on the roadway of Coguitlam Avenue in order to pro- vide additional warning of the STOP sign. The other solution would be to install a four-way stop. A‘four-way stop is not usually used at intersections where the volumes are as low as this one. However, where there is a serious accident problem, a four-way stop may solve the problem with only a moderate amount of inconvenience to the traffic. In view of the relatively high number of angle accidents which have occurred at this intersection through people running the STOP sign on Coquitlam Avenue, it was felt that a four-way stop -should be tried.
