V6H 3R7 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 1991 ISSN 6319 812x ROBIN HOPPER WORKSHOP The dance studio of “In the Meantime” location of the Richmend Cultural Centre, at No 3 Rd. and Westminster Hwy. was filled to capacity on September 21st and 22nd dueto Robin Hopper's workshop, Among his many accomplishments, Robin Hopper was the first recipient of the Saldye Bronfman Award of Excellence tn Craft in 1977. Hels author of “Ceramic Spectrum” and “Functional Pottery", and founder and first president of the Metchosin Internation Summer School of Arts. This humourous performer (due to his acting career in his early years}, touched on many areas of pottery making on the wheel on Day one. He marbled clays in various ways and facetted the bottles to show variations in the design. Lids for his teapots were formed in a flash and had to be repeated. for many of us blinked and missed it Sunday. he started with a slide presentation on lwo projectors to explain the relationship of his work to histery, geology, and to the environment. The thrown marbled forms were completed by incising the rims Inte colourful fan-like bowls. His wonderful parabolic bottles thrown in two Pieces and joined were decorated with his specialty, “mocha diffusion" technique. He then continued to show us Variations of slip decorating and brushing. Samples of his work are now fired, and will be used as inspirational pieces by the Richmond Potters’ Club.
