Junior men’s division title went to Joe Nelson of Prince Rupert, 1 of 3 talented running brothers. Anna Bernard was a 1st-time winner of King of the Mountain's women’s open section. Corisa Berlin was the only juvenile girl entered, so she received a prize as well. PS... Roy Cole won the gold medal for Class ’B' trapshooting at the recent B.C.Summer Games. Pg. 10 for Summer Games results. Final results of the 14th annual "King of the Mountain’ foot race in Terrace on July 28 seemed to be very similar to past years on the men’s side. For Smithers’ Richard Harrison, it was a ‘piece of cake’ as he legged in the best men’s and best overall time of 37 minutes, 30 seconds. The record-holder at 35.29 in 1988, counted his sixth triumph in this annual’ summer event, (He had won previously in 1983, 84, 85, 86, and 88). For Terrace’s Colin Parr (a two- time past winner in 81 and 87), it was a familiar story. He was run- nerup to Harrison in 39.21. Colin told us that despite having the second best time overall in 14 years (35.33), he has had the unen- viable honour of the runnerup position at least half a dozen times. One of the famed running Nelsons of Prince Rupert (Charles) garnered. third spot in open men with a 41 flat timing. The best female time was tumed in by Rupert’s Rose-Marie Cheer. She had won the open women’s side last year, but moved up to Masters women this year for the best overall of 47.18. Cheer had won her race in 1990 in 51.46, She was almost four minutes faster this year in spite of a dreary conditions. Actually, the rain and mud didn’t discourage the entire Cheer family. Rose-Marie’s two sons — Justin and Brent — came home winners as well. Justin won the Juvenile boys in 48.45 while younger Brent was runnerup in 50.35. The open women’s crown went to Anna Bernard in 50.12. Race organizer Ed Ansems ran a 41.31 time to win the Masters (40 and over) section by about six minutes over his closest rival. Ansems said poor weather kept the turnout down to 54 — not the smallest ever, nor the largest ever. Heaven... The Cheer family of Rupert won their share of honours; mom Rose-Marie won ladies’ masters, Justin (right) was juvenile champ while brother Brent (left) was runnerup to Justin. Blueback swimmers right at home Terrace Blueback swimmers felt right at home during three major meets in July. In the July 5 to 7 junior provin- cial championships at Victoria, Dave Vanderlee (13) and Vince Gair (11) took part from Tertace. Dave won a bronze in the 400 individual medley, and placed fifth in the 200 I-M and 400 freestyle. He has another year in this section and is expected to be near the top next year. Vince was Up against 12-year-olds and failed to crack the top 10. In senior provincials at Victoria on July 13 and 14, Tori Mac- Kenzie and Denise Vanderlee competed for Terrace. The 15 and 16-year-olds did a great job con- sidering they were up against National fevel swimmers in some cases. The i4-under B.C. Champion- ships at UBC from July 19 to 21 provided the Bluebacks with their best effort. It was the "Garth Coxford meet" with our 10-year-old chuming out five gold medals (50, 100 and 400 free, plus the 100 fly and 200 1- M). Garth also picked up a couple of silver medals (100 back and 50 breast) and wound up with a fifth place in the 50 fly. Garth often finished several [zm meWORTORM| metres ahead of rivals in his gold- ; | medal events and was undisputed grand aggregate winner for his group. He is currently ranked best 10-under male swimmer in B.C. and possibly Canada.
