SPORTS COMMENT By DON SCHAFFER The Orioles and the Pirates will be playing off starting tonight for the World Series, in case you have been fishing or hiding in a hole all weekend. Since Thanksgiving is passed, I feel it is safe to stick my neck out and make a prediction. . ‘I pick the Orioles, in seven games. Let it be known, however, that my prediction is based solely on the fact that I don’t like the Pirates’ Halloween-style uniforms. Other than that, the teams will provide.a goad contest between different strengths. The Pirates are an awesome hitting team, led by Dave Parker, Willie Stargell and the man who beat the Expos, Phil Garner. The Orioles have a strong pitching staff, made up of four no-name starters and several lesser-known relievers, Despite their lack of acclaim, they did lead - the Orioles to the best record in the league this season, ‘and they should: be pressed hard by the Pittsburgh aluggers to maintain their winning pace. As I said, Baltimore in seven, but please don’t make book on it just because I say so. I picked Cincinnatti to beat the Pirates, too. In local sports, the Timbermen's season will be starting soon, and the team is looking better all. the time. Tonight they meet the Kitimat Winterhawks, who I haven't seen yet, but seem to be able to score goals fairly well, based on their last two decisions, the 9-4 game over Terrace and their 10-6 loss against Prince Rupert. Both teams should provide good hockey for home-town fans, and I will try to get enough people organized so that all the scores will be here, all through the season. In the matter of organization, I would still like to see more input of local sports here at the Herald. [ am trying to get hold of everyone involved in local sports, but since I haven't been left with a lot of sources, and being new in town, it is difficult to find out who runs what, If you have information abouta club, ateam, or a league, call the Herald at 695-6357, I'd appreciate hearing from anyone in Terrace or Kitimat, and if you are in Kitimat, feel free to call collect. Timbermen win in Smithers The Terrace Tim- bermen travelled to Smithers on Sunday to play the Totems there and came away witha 5-4 win. Timbermen Coach Dale Kushner said that his team looked very good, and that had they not had a five-minute lapse at the beginning of the second period, Timbermen would have dominated the games’ scoring. The Timbermen took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but fell asleep during the intermission. By the time five min the. the second, the Terrace squad had fallen behind 3- 2. Timbermen scorers were Dave Sharpe with two goals, with Lee Marleau, Mike Mowat and Doug Linton each with singles, Smithers scorers were not available. . In other PNWHL games over the weekend, the Kitimat Winterhawks were beaten 10-6 by the defending league champions Prince Rupert Kings on Saturday night. Details of this game were es were gone in not available ‘ t NHL PREVIEW By EATON HOWITT The Canadian Press Edmonton Oilers, who lost year wound up on top of the World Hockey Association's regular schedule, won't do the same thing this year in the National Hockey League's Clarence Camphell Conference but they may make things interesting. With a couple of ex- ceptions, the Oilers are a team of youngaters led by the teen-aged star Wayne Gretzky. - Coach Glen Sather says that if the team haa to struggle the first year, he would rather struggle with young players. Other teams in the Smythe Division of the Campbell Conference are Chicago Black Hawks, Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks and the former WHA champlon Winnipeg Jets. In the Patrick Division of the same conference are. Atlanta Flames, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyera and Washington Capitala. The Caps moved over from the Norris Division in the recent ex- pansion realignment, Sather is not going strielly with a youth movement, He wiil be banking heavily on goalie Dave Dryden, 36. Defenceman Al Hamilton is 33 and there are a couple more over 30 giving it a shot. Lee Fogolin, 24, a cast-off from Buffalo Sabres, wilt be on defence and there are young players such as Pat Price, 24, Kevin Lowe, 26, and former Finnish national player Risto Siltanen, 22. Winnipeg Jets don’t ap- pear to be nearly as strong as thelr Edmonton rivals, although they beat the Oilers in the playoffs last year and won the Avco Cup. The likes of Peter Marsh, a former Cincinnali Stingers player, goalie Gary Smith, centre Petre Sullivan and veteran winger Bill Lesuk will have to struggle to keep the Jets respectable. Players such as Barry Long, Kim Clackson, Terry Ruskowski, Richard Preston and Kent Nilsson were lost in the draft. ‘Atlanta Flamea, although . they have failed in five at- tempts to get into the second round af the playoffs, lock like the team to beat even Islanders, - though they were lastin the . But the Flames will have - Patrick Divison last season. Under new coach Al MacNeil, the former Mon- treal coach, they are golng for a speedier style of play. Off-season acquisitions auch as Nilsson, and defenceman Pekka Rautakalllo from Finland give them three 10¢polnt scorers, Nilsson, a 107-point scorer with the Jets, combines with Bob MacMillan and Guy Choulnard in the over-100 class. NFL ROUNDUP to fight hard to dislodge New York Islanders from the top of the Pairick Division. With outstanding players such as Denis Potvin, Hart Trophy winner Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies, the Islanders are aiming for the Stanley Cup. their only weakness seems to be a dependence on the Trottler without much to back it up. Glenn Reach and Bill Smith are top- ranked goaltenders, Tampa Bay loses, Seahawks win second OAKLAND (AP) — For the second week in a row, Oakland Raiders didn't allow a touchdown. The Raiders beat Miami Dolphins 13-3 for their eighth consecutive Monday night vietory and made their 10- year record in the series, televised nationally in the U.S., 12-1-1 — best in the National Feotball League. Linebacker Ted Hendricks intercepted a pass by Bob Griese and ran 23 yards for a touchdown, Rogie lineman Reggie Kinlaw sacked the Miam! quarterback four times aa the Raiders followed up impressively on. their 27-8 victory over Denver: Broncos a week earlier. . “That's.quite a feat,”’ said Oakland coach Tom Flores, whose team had lost three consecutive games, allowing at least 27 poirits in each loss, before turning things around defensively. On Sunday, the last of the unbeaten clubs dropped its _firat_ game-as the previously winleas New York Giants edged Tampa Bay Buc- caneera 7-14. : “Wereally didn't expect to go undefeated,” said Tampa Bay coach John, McKay. “Now that we've lost, we won't get so much attentlon, and there will be less pressure.” Elsewhere, Pittsburgh Steelers rolled over Cleveland Browns 51-35, Denver Broncos blanked San Diego Chargere 7-0, Dallas Cowboys whipped Minnesota Vikings 396-20, Los Angeles Rams walloped New Orleans Saints 95-17, New England Patriots got by Detrolt Lions 24-17 and Kansas City Chiefa edged Cincinnati Bengals 10- 7. St. Louis Cardinals upset Houston Oilers 24-17, Phila- delphia Eagles ' downed Washington Redskins 28-17, Chicago . shut ‘out ' Bulfalo Bills 7-0, Seattle Seahawks outduelled winless San Franclsco ‘dBers 35-24, Atlanta Falcons smothered Green Bay Packers 25-7 _ det Rangers top Another team being looked on as a ible surprise finisher is Colorado Rockies. The acquisition of head coach Don Cherry from Boston Bruins is one of the main reasons. The addition of Rob Ramage on defence also should help considerably. If Cherry lives up to hig reputation, Colorado will acon forget last season when they were deep in the cellar of the Smythe Division, the weakest in the league. Chicago Black Hawks, who finished on top of the Smythe Division last season, will have Tony Esposito back in goal. He had been planning to retire. ; Chicago coach Eddie Johnston said: ‘‘Taking Espo away from Chicago would be like taking Guy Lafleur away from Mon- treal.”’ Defencemen Bob Murray and Doug Wilson are good going both ways and there always is Stan Mikita, although he finally ia. to show his age. The Hawks should agaln end in first place in their division. . And nobody can write off Philadel Flyers as long as they have Bobby Clarke, the hardest working player in the league. Flyers coach Pat Quinn was able to make one good off-season move in acquiring goalle Phil Myre from tlanta. - Left wing seems to be a pratiem after. you name Bill arber. Rick MacLeiah could return to that spot but PP aet year the Fl B r ra were secant the Tenders in the Patrick Division. This year they should have trouble g that close to the top.
