The cold-blooded, calculating hand of the US. State Department squeezed

tighter around the throat of the tiny Guatemalan nation this week, engineering un-

scrupluous moves which caused the democratic government of President Jacobo Arbenz
Guzman to fall last Sunday, forced the: succeeding military government to collapse
within the next,‘two days, and finally brought a cease-fire which opened the door to

quisling Col. Castillo Armas and
allowed him to dictate peace
terms. ;

Object of the Yankee pressure
was to extinguish the last spark
of democracy in Guatemala and
install a regime completely sub-
servient to Washington.

Withysincredible cynicism, the
U.S. ambassador to Guatemala,
Jack Peurifoy, told: Guillermo
Toriello, foreign minister in the
Arbenz government, that he “had
no control over the situation,”
and then “suggested” that “a

clean sweep of the officers of

the government would seem to
be in order” if peace were to be
restored.

Edwin C. Lahey, Chicago Daily
News correspondent in Guate-
mala City, reported this week
how Col. Diaz, who succeeded Ar-
benz, discussed with the U.S. am-
bassador what kind of govern-

ment would be acceptable to
Washington. Diaz balked at of-
fering the U.S. puppet, Col. Cas-
tillo Armas, a government post
—-and his military government
fell the following day.

“Armas has some _ bargaining
power in the P-47s that have been
hammering the open villages to
the north of Guatemala City,”
callously reported Lahey. “His
invading planes have been razing
villages in the department of Za-
capa without mercy since the
weather turned in their favor a
few days ago.’’ He did not men-
tion what everyone knows —
that the planes are U.S.-made,
and were supplied to Armas
along with other military equip-
ment by Washington. Without
this U.S. help the invasion could
never have started.

The bare-faced brutality shown
by the United States in so open-
ly intervening in Guatemalan af-

fairs has shocked the world and
caused a “hands off Guatemala”
movement to sweep through
South America.

In Buenos Aires large demon-
strations took place, with crowds
riarching down the central Calle
Florida shouting: “Guatemala
Yes! Yankees No!”

The Uruguay Chamber of Dep-
uties passed a resolution of solid-
arity with Guatemala, calling the
aggression “a conspiracy against
peace in America.”

The democratic press of Brazil
has denounced the action of the
U.S. and has also called for solid-
arity with Guatemala.

The cease-fire represents a
temporary victory for the United
States. But the people of Guate-
mala will never cease their strug-
gie to regain the democracy they

‘have now lost, and will inevitably
triumph over all puppet traitors
in the pay of Washington.
