Critical observations have been made of our Committee’s Participation in the vigorous heckling and vocal opposition directed towards Paul Hellyer at this meeting. “Our Committee has met several times since the Hellyer meeting and has critically appraised the event and has considered both the helpful criticism of our friends in the movement for peace as well as the hostile criticism of the pro- establishment news medias. ‘The unanimous agreement of those associated with our Committee, those who were there and those who were not, is that the criticism of our Committee’s actions is justified and gave the pro- establishment news media a welcomed opportunity to divert _ attention from the issue of Canadian involvement to an issue of democracy. Paul Hellyer had the right to speak and those interested in hearing him also had the right to hear. Our actions that evening in that regard encroached upon that very basic right. “This does not in any way change Our appraisal of Paul Hellyer (amongst the most hawkish in the Liberal Cabinet) or of the Liberal Cabinet as a whole, as relates to their successful efforts in involving Canada, both materially and morally, in the American war in Vietnam. It is our estimation that the majority of Canadians do not support the American war in Vietnam. “The Liberal Cabinet continues to attempt justifying Canada’s complicity; i.e. Hellyer’s statement to students to be careful not to become great moralists over the Vietnam war as part of their education is being paid for by the sale of Canadian goods, including arms, to the U.S. “The Liberal Cabinet also resorts to lying and deceit as shown by Paul - Martin’s press statement, which was provoked by a demonstration at the. Vancouver International Airport attended by our Committee. During the conference at the airport, Paul Martin stated: Whatever we sell (to U.S.) goes only to non-sensitive areas. He firmly denied Canadian arms are being used in the Vietnam war (see Vancouver Sun, Feb. 2/68). ‘“‘These statements ‘were recognized by most as such a blatant fabrication that they hardly needed to be refuted. Several days later Eric Kierans, said: ‘I know enough to know we are sending them (arms). Such talk as Martin’s is just diddling around, pretending the Pentagon does not know the final destination of the arms. If the arms are not going” to Vietnam, there must be some incredible warehousing problems in the U.S.’(Vancouver Sun, Feb. 5/68). “Since the formation of the Committee Against Canadian Production For U.S. War three months ago, we have called numerous demonstrations. We have distributed and mailed over 40,000 pieces of relevant information and leaflets, and at the same time have led a boycott against Dow products (Saran Wrap, Handi-Wrap, etc.) at the Safeway stores, and have through picketing and shopping-in forced the removal of these products from the shelves of six Safeway stores. “These modest achievements of our Committee have been accomplished at a time when the danger of further escalation of the war has become increasingly critical. “Our Committee is not hesitant in being self-critical of an action and admitting an error. We welcome the helpful and friendly criticism of our friends in the peace movement, and our Committee feels confident that the experience we have gained, both positive and negative, in the last three months of intensive activity will enable us to more effectively contribute to the movement in our country to end Canada’s involvement in the U.S. war in Vietnam.” DUNDAS B-A (WALL & DUNDAS ST.) SPECIALIST / 255-6828 H Leg’ Ph ‘No’ vote urged on North Shore college Ina statement issued this week the North Shore Club of the Communist Party declared its support for the idea of a Community College. “However,” said the statement, “the college, to be of real benefit to the people must be established and financed by the Provincial Government with a democratically constituted Board of Control. “Voters on Vancouver Island and in the Interior have already turned down college plebiscites which lacked these features. The Communist Party is urging a ‘NO’ vote on March 7 as a first step toward the establishment of a Community College on a proper basis. “Traditionally all higher education costs have been the responsibility of the Provincial Government. They have received assistance in the form of education grants from the Federal Government. But Premier Bennett has amended the B.C. Schools Act to include Community Colleges in an. attempt to foist some of the Provincial Government’s responsibility for financing higher education onto the already overburdened municipal taxpayer. “The amendment to the Schools Act also provides for a College Board of Control the majority of which Alberni gets kindergartens PORT ALBERNI, B.C.:— One of the rewards for electing a progressive majority to Alberni District School Board was realized last week when it was announced that kindergarten classes will be inaugurated in the Alberni Valley in September for children born in 1963. Kindergarten sessions of 22 hours in morning and afternoon shifts will be held at Eighth Avenue, Calgary, Alberni, John Howitt, Cherry Creek, River Bend, Faber and Beaver Creek elementary schools. would be either direct Government appointees or Government employees. Provision is made for only one elected trustee from the municipalities. “Tf the plebiscite should pass on March 7, it will establish the precedent for the increasingly obvious attempts of the Bennett Government to dump its financial responsibilities onto small taxpayers in the urban areas. It will set a precedent for taxing homeowners to pay for higher education. It: would also help to establish the pattern of undemocratic controls at a ‘regional’ level. For these reasons we urge voters to say ‘NO’ on March 7 to Bennett’s plans. “We further urge everyone concerned with this problem to join in the demand for the establishment of a North Shore Community College with the full cost of construction and operation covered by the Provincial , Government and for a democratically constituted College Board of Control to include elected representatives from the participating municipalities and also representatives from labor and ratepayers organizations in the areas. “‘We believe a united effort of the people can gain a genuine Community College for the North ~ Shore.
