June 28th, 1976 Moved by Alderman Keryluk: Seconded by Alderman Mabbett: WHEREAS the Board of School Trustees of Schocl District No. 43 (Coquitlam) has constructed the Hastings Junior Secondary School west of the Coquitlam River, north of Lincoln Avenue, and east of Pipeline Road; AND WHEREAS the said school is expected to open in September, 1976; AND WHEREAS the majority of the students for the said school will come from the area of the City of Port Coquitlam located east of the Coquitlam River thus necessitating a long, arduous, and hazardous journey to the said school; AND WHEREAS an unsatisfactory condition arises as the only route to the school is along the very busy Lougheed Highway which will shortly be in process of widening from two lanes to four lanes thus presenting all the consequent and usual hazards of detours, heavy road-building machinery, unsatisfactory walking surfaces, etc.3 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of School Trustees of School District No. 43 (Coquitlam) and the appropriate agencies of the Provincial Covernment be requested to make the necessary funds available, if that construction should begin, in order that an effective shuttle bus service may be operated from the area of the City of Port Coquitlam east of the Coquitlam River to the new Hastings Junior Secondary School west of the River until such time as walking conditions along the Lougheed Highway return to a reasonable standard. Carried. Alderman Thompson voted against the resolution. During discussion of the foregoing resolution it was noted that for many years students from the west side of the River have had to attend schools on the east side and therefore use the Highway (in its present condition) as access and hence the bussing provision should only apply during the construction period. Alderman Leaking suggested that without a great deal of expense on the part of the Department of Highways and the City it would be possible to make a safe pathway from Manning Avenue on the east side, across the bridge sidewalk, and along the dyke on the west side of the River to the school.
