From CLRA of B.C. Company refused de-accreditation TERRACE — H& H Builders of Terrace want out of the Construction Labor Relations Asso- ciation (CLRA) of B.C. but their application for de-accreditation has been refused by the Labor Relations Board. ’ The CLRA is a bar- gaining unit which represents employers in union negotiations and jurisdictional disputes. Dennis Palmu, project manager and estimator for H & H Builders said it costs H & H Builders about $250 a year to belong to the CLRA. H & H Builders have been a member of the bargain- ing unit since the late 1970s but Palmu said company representatives have not been satisfied with the way the CLRA has handled the bargain- ing for the last six years. “We'd rather do the bargaining on our own,” Palmu said. Why pay them when we don’t like the way they are handl- ing negotiations? he add- Getting de-accredited from. the CLRA is simi- lar to- proceedings re- quired when a. member requests decertification from a union. We want to get out of our bargain- ing association, Palmu said. -H & H Builders sub- mitted an application for de-accreditation six months ago. The request was turned down, They appealed the decision and received a letter at the end of September from the LRB of B.C. indicating the request had been denied. The LRB has the authority to apply the labor law, Palmu_ ex- plained. According to the LRB’s interpreta- tion, H & H Builders didn’t have sufficient reasons to be de-ac- credited, Palmu said. Now representatives at H & H Builders are reassessing their position and options. Palmu said the company can make their concerns known to the Minister of Labor for B.C. and other members of government, file a complaint with the om- budsman or voice their opinions through the media. _ Palmu said he suspects the: LRB ‘is reluctant to let H & H Builders out of the bargaining unit as it may set a precedent for the other 600 or so members of the associa- tion.
