But that appears to be what council wants to do now that it has the authority, thanks to the provincial government, to set alcohol-serving establishment closing hours. The current closing hour requirement is 2 a.m., yet city councils can now stretch that to 4 a.m. upon the request of establishments. Some councillors want to hold the line at 2 a.m. but others are leaning toward either a full bore 4 a.m. closing or variations depending upon where an establishment is located, All this comes despite the latest RCMP annual report offered up to city council by Inspector Marlin Degrand. While crime overall is down, the inspector notes, alcohol-related crime has increased. ; More problems downtown, more crime and higher policing costs are also all possible if not probable by council agreeing to longer open- ings, the inspector added. As well, the inspector is also quite candid in saying that his detachment has its hands full as it is in terms of staffing challenges. (Note that the detachment has two pretty much permanent of- ficer vacancies since the city began cutting back its police services budget several years ago.) So the same city council that has read De- grand’s stats and which has sanctioned police cost cuts is now contemplating allowing licensed establishmenis to stay open longer, a situation which will invariably lead to increased pressure on the police force. This is not to suggest’that every‘stitch of alco- ; hol-related crime can be laid at the feet of li- censed establishments. But it is to suggest that city council should think very, very carefully before careening down the road toward longer opening hours. Woof-woof OK. IT SOUNDS like the family dog, woof- woof, but its abbreviation is WOF and that stands for Working Opportunity Fund and an adaptation of it may be one of the more sensible ideas to come out of the not-so-new provincial Liberal government. WOF was started by the former NDP govern- ment as a labour-sponsored investment fund, spurred by tax credits, that poured money into the provincial economy. The adaptation is being fronted by Skeena MLA Roger Harris who has lined up like-minded MLAs from around the province to push for regional WOF-type funds which would be RRSP-eligible. Calls and letters to Mr. Harris in support of this plan would be welcome and needed, ee ESTE] " PUBLISHER/EDITOR: Rod Link ADVERTISING MANAGER: Brian Lindenbach PRODUCTION MANAGER: Edouard Credgeur NEWS: Jeff Nagel NEWS/SPORTS Sarah Zimmerman 2002 WINNER NEWS /COMMUNITY: Jennifer Lang CCNA BETTER FRONT OFFICE: Darlene Keeping & Carol McKay NEWSPAPERS CIRCULATION SUPERVISOR: Term Gordon COMPETITION ADVERTISING CONSULTANTS: Bert Husband & Stacy Gyger TELEMARKETER: Stacy Gyger COMPOSING: Susan Credgeur AD ASSISTANT: Sandra Stefanik SUBSCRIPTION RATES BY MAIL: $56.25(+$3.94 GST)=60.19 per year: Seniors $49.50 (+$3.47 GST)=52.97: Out of Province $63.22 (+$4.43 GST)=67,65 Outside of Canada (6 months) $152.34 (+$10.66 GST)=163.00 MEMBER OF B.C. Germany and France were working on a new plan to try to avert war in Iraq that would compel Baghdad to admit thousands of U.N. troops to en- force disarmament and tighter sanctions, the German news magazine Der Spiegel said in an advance story published on the net. A German government spokesman confirmed Berlin and Paris were working toge- ther to find a peaceful alterna- tive to war with Iraq. but would not provide any details of the efforts. Germany’s leading news magazine said the idea had originated in the office of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Berlin and Paris had been working on the details of the 1: initiativein: secret. talks since. the beginning of the years: 31° . Clearly, this development will separate the hawks from the doves and maybe force the fence-sitters like our prime minister to make up their minds whether they are with or against the United States in the war on terror. — To me the issue is clear.
