Al 2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 16, 2000 Doctors here shelve strike olan, join provincial talks DOCTORS HERE and other places have aban- doned plans to strike in fa- vour of a renewed effort to bargain for better pay and increased health care ser- vices. Talks between the B.C, Medical Association (BCMA), the province- wide body. which repre- sents doctors, and the pro- vince are due to start to- morrow in Vancouver. Doctors from rural areas and small cities around the province will be at the bargaining table, Internal medicine spe- cialist Dr. Michael Kenyon will be representing the Terrace and District Medi- cal Association. Doctors will be follow- ing the lead of their Prince George and Williams Lake colleagues who earlier this year received signing bo- nuses and pay incentives worth nearly $12 million a year. Smaller centres such as Terrace do have doctor pay incentives but they aren’t as much as the deals signed in Prince George and Williams Lake. And aithough provincial officials ranging from Pre- mier Ujjal Dosanjh on downward have for several weeks said doctors cannat expect to gain more than the ones did in Prince George, that principle is now a bit fuzzy. “All | can say is that there will be discussions and details of those will not be discussed,” said health ministry spokes- mnan Jeff Gaulin late last week. The idea of a province- wide attempt at a pay set- tlement for rural and small city doctors grew last week afler a previous plan to have doctors bargain with individual health au- thorities was rejected by those authorities. , And in some respects the province-wide bargain- ing attempt is what the province had in mind all along until Prince George doctors took action in June and reached their own selt- tlement. But local physician Dr. Bill Redpath says he and his colleagues don’t want Workers get raises THE 100 members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU) working for the Terrace and District Community Services Society have voted. 100 per cent in favovr of a new contract giving them large raises, It fallows a province-wide master agreement between the union and social service agencies across the pro- vince reached after an 11-week strike last year. The new base rate in Terrace will be $15.30 an hour with increases due each year of the five-year deal. “The 11-week strike last year was about reaching equity for all social service workers across the province,” said union official Carol Nielson. The deal also includes a formal method of evaluating duties compared to pay rates and a Registered Retire- ment Savings Plan where member contributions are mat- ched by the employer. “This was a huge issue in Terrace,” said Nielson of the pension plan. The local community services society operates a number of agencies, including Northwest Addiction Ser- vices, mental health programs and group homes, Regular employees working 15 hours or more a week” get improved health and welfare benefits, there’s a bet- ter sick leave plan and more vacation time under the Dr. Bill Redpath to lose sight of the need for better medical services here. And they’re worried be- cause there appears to be no opportunity to address local issues at the pro- vince wide bargaining table, “The hospital and tis funding has always been the major issue,” said Redpath last week, “Prince George came along fortuitously and got everybody’s dander up and allowed us to concentrate on the hospital funding and - we don’t want to lose that,” he said, What Redpath doesn’t want happening is an agreement on pay in- creases for doctors withoul any accompanying boost to health care. “ That would simply mean having better paid doctors who would still be unable to practise their craft by addressing patient care, said Redpath. Gaulin was unable to shed any light on how local issues were tobe handled. Doctors have said they want an agreement on pay in place by Aug. 31 and have promised job action if one isn’t. Kenyon, who will repre- sent Terrace doctors, is one of two internal medi- cine specialists here. But the other is away for August and, with Ke- nyon off negotiating, that means there won’t be any coverage for this specialty,: said Redpath.
