On January 20 he was 78-years- old, The story of how John came to Terrace is an inter- esting one. He was born in Calgary in 1920, growing up in the rural Pine Lake area, just west of Red Deer. When John turned 16 in 1936 he joined the army as a cadet, John took advanced training for the active militia, and learned telecom- munications skills, John said he received among the best education there is from the amy cadets. He was with them for four years. After cadets John went on to study for two years at the Institute of Technology and Art in Calgary. While there he received numerous awards for his art. Lita Dunham, and Ines Lopez represented the Ladies Auxiliary of branch 13. Also at- tending was out-going zone commander, Beverly Dickie. The new zone commander is Berlba Hanes from Smithers. He went to Manitoba for basic training, then was stationed in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He retired from the RCAF five years later — with a well-rounded education in advanced technology. But ironically he had never com- pleted his grade 12 educa- lion. So he took an op- portunity to finish his high school degree through a pro- gram offered for veterans. Afier graduating in 1947 John went to work in Turner Valley, Alberta at Canada’s first of] and natural gas field, Eventually he found a job at the laboratory. After that John spent a year at the university in Ed- monton, then transferred to a fine arts school in Banff. Sadly, his mother’s health began to fail and be returned home to care for her, Affer her death John de- cided to take some courses on design and abstract paint- ing and photography, That led to a job working as a draftsman for three years. Then John retumed to Banff and worked a1 the fine arts school until he decided to move to Vancouver. In Vancouver John took a course on prospecting, grad- uating from this in 1964. Aun ad placed in the newspaper by a Carl Muller of Terrace for a prospecting partner caught his cye and he moved north. John came to Terrace in June, 1964 to meet Carl and Shaw's life took many paths Gladys Muller. He stayed at the Muller’s cabin on Lakelse as he checked out the area. It was at this time that John discovered Doreen, the beautiful area near Cedar- vale, He still travels there by train 10 spend time in the woods during nice weather. While in Terrace John worked for Bill Young for five years at the drive-in theatre and for once year at the downtown theatre. Then in 1974 John went to Prince Rupert and went to work for the Canada Coast Guard base there. In 1984 he returned to Terrace.
