TURNING WOOD into toys is the business of Peter Vogelaar, His company, Timber Toys, is an ex-
ample of value-added production through the design and manufacturing of items for children.
Vogelaar started operations last fall and has become a fixture at various events highlight local

crafts and products,

He’s a master of his craft

It’s Peter Vogelaar’s workplace
in his home and his business is
another, albcit small, example of
value-added industry in the narth-
west, ,

It’s called-Timber Toys, and
he’s been producing high quality
pine toys and children’s furniture
since last September.

His creations include personal-
ized kids’ benches, with names in
the form of multi-coloured, pop-
out block letters in the back of the
bench, :

The benches are custom-
ordered and take about a week to

complete, he said.

He also makes rocking horses,
and rocking dinosaurs — called,
of course, Rockasaurs.

There’s also birdhouses, bird
feeders, and a stacking wagon
made of wooden pieces that come
apart like building blocks.

So far, Vogelaar is marketing
his work to outlets in Victoria and
Edmonton, as well as locally
through craft sales. ;

To fill out his time, he teach
carpentry courses at the college

and through the city’s parks and

recreation department,

“It’s starting to pick up a little
bit, but it’s still kind of slow,”
Vogelaar said of the business.
