Island views and By V. VICTOR A DELEGATE IN DUNCAN— Mrs. Beagle, of Vancouver, was a delegate to the World Congress of Women held in Moscow last summer. From the Soviet Union this lady brought many coloured slides which she had snapped during her meanderings in that country. A large group of Isl- anders were privileged to view the slides at a gathering held in the Eagles Hall in Duncan. - After the Slides were shown and the question period complet- ed a Pot Luck supper was serv- ed, all of which was thoroughly enjoyed by adults and children alike. One noticeable feature was the lack of pastry due to ‘‘No- Sugar Week’’. There is a housewife’s strike that paid off, even if the B.C. Sugar interests didn’t agree that the drop in sugar wasn’t caused by the lack of sales that week. It should happen again, soon. This is the kind of action the sugar monopolies understand best. It crimps the pocket-book. * ‘ok * A PORT ALBERNI PROBLEM: The executive secretary of the Vancouver Island Publicity Bureau told the Twin City coun- cils they should come up with a gimmick to lure more tourists to the Valley. Maybe he is right, but it would seem much more sensible to have the Big Com- pany eliminate some of the odor that fouls the district, or if that is too costly, they could unlock some of the gates that stop visi- tors from leaving the main road. There are many beautiful plac- 3: ‘Everything in Flowers’ : FROM : EARL SYKES : 42 E. Hastings, MU 1-3855 > Vancouver, B.C. The only way to see them is to walk past the barred gates. The Big Com- pany cannot stop pedestrians but they can stop automobiles. One thing the city councils should know, tourists will not walk. A gimmick indeed. * * * NANAIMO EDITORIALS; There is seldom an editorial in the local rag worth reading, some of them should not have been writ- ten. The latest attack on Colin Cameron certainly was unwar- ranted for he is the man chosen by -fifty percent of the voters to represent them at Ottawa. The voters also elected anNDP mem- ber to the Provincial House which shows the majority ofthe citizens to be Socialist inclined. To con- tinually have our representatives attacked by press shows little ~ regard for the intelligence of the_ local reader. Many readers in Nanaimo have quit the paper, and that is the way it should be. In fact more should quit, it isn’t that good a paper. * * * HEARD AND OVERHEARD: You ‘can make eight thousand dollars a year if, you want to be a Tire Consultant, and if, you live in Kamloops. You need no exper- ience, but you must belong to the right political party and the right church. MANY members of the sub- locals of the I.B.E.W. are dis- appointed in the lack of support shown by the sub-locals for the strike at the shipyards. These Victorians need support if only by the sanction of the sub-lo- cals. SMRC calls for recreational survey - The Surrey Municipal Reform Committee has called for ‘fa comprehensive survey ofthe rec- reational needs’’ of the munici- pality, making full use of mun- icipally-owned parks and lands. The demand arose out of dis- cussion on a proposed by-law soon to be voted upon in Whal- “ley. The by-law would establish a Whalley Recreational Centre at taxpayers’ expense. In a leaflet receiving wide circulation, the UPJO asks for public action on the following two points: * Writing to David Orlikow, MP (NDP—Winnipeg North) ex- pressing support for his proposed bill which would make it a crime to use the mails for hate propa- ganda, * Writing to Guy Favreau, Minister of Justice, urging the introduction of such legislation. The leaflet states that the recent upswing in nazi-inspired, racist literature calls for ‘‘action by every. member of the Jewish community—by every organiza- tion in the community and all Canadians.”’ Int'l Women’s Day address by surgeon International Women’s Day was celebrated by residents of New Westminster and the Fraser Val- ley at a meeting held last Sun- day at the Dreamland HallinNew Westminster. The audience was addressed by one of B.C.’s leading orthopae- dic surgeons, Dr. A. M. Inglis. Dr. Inglis will soon be head- ing a delegation of 50 Canadian doctors who will be visiting hos- pitals in the Soviet Union. Last year he visited the So- viet Union and reported his im- pressions of that country in a series of articles for the PT. He told his listeners he had been greatly impressed by the medical profession in the USSR, where they have one doctor to service each four cases. In Can- ada, a doctor is expected to serve one thousand people. Of particular importance was his statement that over 75 per- cent of the doctors there are women. DAVID STANLEY, 19- year-old Scarboro youth, whose name was linked with the distribution of race- hate literature in Canada. Last year he was convicted of inciting a white mob in Birmingham, Ala- bama. Racist groups are being ex- posed all across Canada, the most recent one being near Victoria, B.C. last week. Papers arriving at the PT office indicate the rise of fascist groups in many countries, Dr. A. M.
