On the theme of the union between jazz and African music, Vancouverite Francois Houle with his jazz group and Aboulaye Koné, with his Montreal-based group Bolo Kan, from Ivory Coast, will spend two days mixing their repertoires and creating new sounds in a studio in Vancouver. The outcome of this creative process will be presented in two performances. First, they will perform on the CBC Radio-Canada outdoor stage on Hamilton Street, for the program “Boulevard du Pacifique; on Wednesday June 25th, 2014, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Please note that in case of rain, the show will take place indoors in Studio 1 in the CBC Radio-Canada building. The next day, ThursdayJune 26th, 2014, the two groups will join to present a full and completely original concert at the Roundhouse. Aboulaye Koné was born in Ivory Coast into a family where music was part of daily life. His father was a ‘griot’ (a West African storyteller/poet/musician), and his uncle Djeli Baba Kienou was a musician who mentored his nephew on tours all over Burkina Faso.In 2004, he launched his own group, Bolo Kan, as a unique platform for Mandinka music in its traditional forms as well as original modern arrangements using electronic instruments. The group combines several colours from the rich palette of African Mandinka music and ranges trom acoustic to electronic and from tradition to modernity. At the World Music Competition organised by the prestigious Montréal festival Nuits Afrique, Bolo Kan Electrique won the Silver Syli in 2008 and Bolo Kan Percussion won the Golden Syli in 2009. In 2011, his firstalbum, entitled Afo Gné (Tell me), a sweet blend of three colours of Mandinka music, was nominated for a JUNO award in the category of Best World Music Album. Carinetist Francois Houle has an established reputation as one of the most inventive musicians on the music scene today in any genre, trom jazz, contemporary Music, improvisation and world music. He has released over twenty albums that have been nominated numerous times for Juno awards and at the West Coast Music Awards. In 2006, Francois performed Lutostawskis Dance Preludes with the CBC Radio Orchestra in a performance that was acclaimed by the Los Angeles Times. In 2007, he composed and gave a premiére performance ofa concerto for clarinet, which he went on to record on the ATMA Classic label with the Turning Point ensemble. On two occasions, DownBeat magazine named hima «talent deserving greater recognition». In addition, the 2008 Critics’ Circle of the same publication named him a «rising star. He is also the winner of the National Debut Competition. In 2012, Frangois Houle also launched the album ‘AVES? a recording of his performance with Norwegian - pianist Hévard Wiikat at the Vancouver TD Jazz Festival in June 201 1. In 2013, Francois was won the award as best clarinettist at the 78th «Downbeat Readers Poll». He is currently rehearsing ‘Pauline? the Vancouver Opera$Jatest original creation, soon to be performed in a world premieére in May 2014.
