COMMENT CANADIAN CRAFTS COUNCIL CONFERENCE The firet ever Canadian Crafte Conference will take place September £0-28, 1982 in the Maritimes and has been well received acrogs Canada. Each provinee was allocated a certain number of spaces and to date two thirds have been apoken for. Brittah Colwnbia ie mot only the furthest avay it te aleo the only provinee NOT providing any financtal assistance to it's delegates. And this from a provinee who boaste of tt's strong economy, hae twice had Bronfman Award winners in five years and has the greatest number of craftspeople per capita in Canada. Saskatchewan te fully finaneing thetr delegates. Out of our quota of 20 delegates we have 9 people indieating they will attempt to pay their oun way. Applications to the Cultural Servicee Branch and the Lottery Grants Branch were both turned down, and while we haven't given up we're already anguishing over the lost opportunity for B.C.'s craftemen to meet and study with some of Canada's top flight artiats/craftepeople. We join Robin Hopper (B.C.'e represent- ative on the board of CCC), the Craftsmene Aeaoetation of B.C. and other concerned people in urging you to write your loeal MLA and your Federal MP about this situatton. Hopefully, at leaet tt will inerease awareness within the government members of the disservice this does to the craft community, as well ae the provinee of B.C, At beat, it may produce some aaatetance for our eraftepeople.
