Potters Guild of British Columbia 1349 Cartwright 5t., Granville Island Vancouver, B.C. V6éH 3R7 MAY 1994 ISSN 6319 812 (604) 683-9623 News from the Gallery Elaine Brewer-White exhibited in the Gallery of B.C. Ceramics, 1359 Cartwright St, Vancouver, during the month of April, "Still Lives" demonstrates Elaine's skill as a sculptor whose creativity renders the imperfections of the human condition and carries it off with a large amount of hour. One piece that demonstrates this well is “Ins" who, with a very bad hair day, "could think of nothing during the sermon but way to getting even with her hairdresser", or Einstein, dressed in cowhide overalls, with the explanation that 2 “very few know of his Teapot by Lawrie Rolland fondness for vaudeville". Elaine's pieces are handbuilt, fired to cone 04 and painted with acrylics. Laurie Rolland’s “New Directions” is presently on display in the Gallery to the end of May. For this show Laurie has created the work from press moulds. Once establishing a mould that provides the desired shape, Laurie then builds teapots and bowls from this one form. Textured moulds that are ribbed and carved with leaves produce surfaces that are an integral part of the shape of the piece. the surfaces are then decorated with coloured stains and slips and fired ta cone 6.
