Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 28, 1999 CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag There’s another war in addition to Kosovo Dear Sir: Re: Hubert Beyer’ 3 *‘Thumbs Up to NATO Action’? in The Terrace Standard, April 14. Like Hubert we all feel sorry for the -in- nocent Muslims of Kosovo, But there is a Jong story behind this. Milosevic and his Christian countrymen have good reasons to be scared of Muslim infiltration. Since its beginning, around the year 700 A.C,’ Muslims have declared a holy war on Jews and Christians alike. All of Christianity was wiped out in the near east and North Africa, Millions of Armenian Christians in southem Russia and Turkey were slaughtered. The Muslims proceeded to penetrate Evrope as far as Spain \ and France. In later years the Ottoman Turks Even today the Muslims are fighting that holy war. They want to push the Jews of Is- racl back into the Mediterranean Sea, Thou- sands of Christians are being murdered in the Sudan right-now, and’ Chinese’ Chris- - tians in Indonesia are losing their lives and their businesses like the Jews did under Hit- ‘fer. Fhe Christian population on the islands of Ambon. and Lombok are being wiped out, too. - The same thing happens on the southem islands of the Phillipines. In fran, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Al- geria, etc., the same picture. What does our-media and our govern- ments have to say about this? Never mind Christians or Israelis? As long as Muslims rage their unholy war we should not let ‘them take over our free democratic coun- % FINANCINGUP' O T048 MONTHS ON ALL 1999 e APR MAZDA VEHICLES 999 Mazda Miata | 1999 Mazda B3000 V6: “1999 Mazda Millenia S° otha ycle Engine. Theft of writer’s items hurts very, very much Dear Sir: I find it a sad situation when young kids are roaming the strects stealing out of un- locked cars. Whether the items be valuable or not they don’t scem to care. Recently my friends and I parked at the White Spot in the parking lot. I left my TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibiy) bag in the truck. While having our coffee someone took my bag and my friend’s camera (in it were pictures of a TOPS installation meet- ing). These items are of no use'to anyone but us. In my bag was a badge we wear at our meetings and we put charms we won on them. Some of these charms are over 15 years old and cannot be replaced, as some of them are discontinued, My badge also bad division winner neck- lace which cannot be replaced, also a bracelet with charms. These items are no good to anyone unless you belong to a TOPS group. When Thursday rolls around I don’t even “This last month has not been the best for me and hav- ‘ing this happening doesn’t help.” . have my weigh book that has weights re- corded in it. Perhaps they can weigh in for me, 50 1 know if J’ve gained or lost. I'd really like my badge, bracelet and weigh book back. Perhaps they could drop it by the radio station (I phoned them) or police station or even the newspaper office. This last month has not been the best for me and having this happening doesn’t help. I hope whoever stole it gets help for their problem. Remember, ‘‘What goes around comes around.’’ i say keep these kids off the streets, . Sharon Fisher, Terrace, B.C, our trades shops. With some stocks at risk of extinction, it was time to put the fish first. Last June, I announced conservation measures that changed the way we. manage the salmon, and the way we fish. That plan followed extensive consultations plus the advice of Fisheries and Oceans biologists and local staff with wide experience in BC: Bo I know the changes have not been easy for people in the Aboriginal, commercial and recreational fisheries. That’s why the Government of Canada oo launched a five-year, $400 million program to restore salmon habitat, : reduce the commercial fleet, provide people with employment assistance - and help communities diversify their economies, . The good news is that conservation means more fish for Canada’ 5 future. Already, some salmon stocks are returning to BC spawning grounds in greatermumbers. Still sTebuilding will take years, and 1999 will be another challenging year," — Salmon face a complex set of problems; some are : within human control while. others are not. Cooperation with the United States is a crucial i issue that we can address. As we have done in our own waters, WE must also put fish first. in the Canada-US Pacific Salmon Treaty. ee : Last year, we reached interim agreements on. conservation and catch shares for fisheries along our southern boundary. The result-was a.75 percent: reduction of Washington State's harvest of our threatened Thompson R River coho. Unfortunately, there was no agreement with Alaska i in 1998. Since last year, experts from both countries have been working to reconcile. . o differences over science, management and conservation. Neither the’ patience... of Canddians nor the health of the resource will support the status quo. _ With political will from all sides, we can build on. the progress of last year. In this year's Pacific Salmon Treaty negotiations, Canada will be pressing hard fora long-term, coast-wide agreement that moves fish to Canada, and. conserves ~ all stocks by improving Canada-US cooperation. Taking action now will help bring greater certainty and security to BC fishermen and ‘communities. ‘Conservation will mean more fish i in the future for everyone. if you would, tke “more information, please visit our website at www.dfo-mpo, g0.ca, call © 1-800-OCANADA (1-800-622-6232) or write to me with your views at the House of Commons, Ottawa, KIAOAG. ; Sincerely, , : - David Anderson , . - : Minister of Fisheries and Oceans |.
