LETTERS Angler nets a reply Dear Sir: - - “When the cold weather comes . and: it gets chilly fishing the Skecna, your angling scribe Rob . Brown is forced to reach into his box. of flies to see what mischicf -Jure be can cast upon the journal- istic waters. Just recently it was a sinking line of praise for Gordon Camp- bell and his KCP position and a couple of barbs for local mayors, Talsira and Wozney, because, (a) ‘they don’t agree with Brown and Campbell, and = (b) they “demonstrate some concem for the future of their communities. The repetition of misinforma- tion, time and again, even by Mr, Brown, however docs not make misinformation magically be- come true, and Alcan frequently has the tedious role of painting this oul, His convoluted logic suggests - that because the Liberal research- --ers say they spent a year rescarch- - ing (*‘analyzing’’) KCP their re- search is thus definitive and all encompassing. It was the same ~ year that the BCUC spent looking ‘into the project in a serious way, hearing both the supporters and the opponents and listening to and giving serious consideration to real technical evidence present ed by qualified people. Wozney and Talstra join Alcan ‘in saying if the analysis is to be complete, the technical evidence submitted has to be considered, The Liberal party backgrounder “clearly demonstrates that if it was considered, il was not deemed as “important as the quotes of jour- nalists writing for The Georgia Straight or for The Vancouver ’ Sun. Brown supports this approach, -.. He cites the error-filled submis- sions of Fifth Estate, Har- - rowsmith and Equinox magazine (which has Alcan’s Kitimat ‘smelter polluting the Nechako - River as an example of its ‘‘care- | - ful?’ research) as part of the *‘wealth of information upon which to base an opinion’? that be was sure ‘was scrutinized by the Liberal research squad.” - Brown runs through the remain- ‘-der of current opponent thinking in basic order and concludes that ‘the government would be well - justified in abrogating the deal and demanding compensation from Alcan. He attributes this belic£ to what he describes as Alcan’s ‘“‘long record of environmental disdain” and its seven citations on the non- compliance lists issued by the Ministry of the Environment, '” Here I have to come back and : Slate categorically, that far from demonstrating disdain for the en- vironment, Alcan in Kitimat has adequately demonstrated quite the opposite. fis efforts to respond to ministry concerns and to oper- ate in compliance are weil docu- , mented and continuously . monitored, I would coniend, in fact, that the smelter’s record is truly a good one when one knowl edgeably considers the range of environmental vulnerability of any such large industrial operat- ing facility. “To recognize this, I suggest that “Mr. Brown read a copy of Al- can’s publicly-available annual “Feport on the environment. Meanwhile, millions of dollars are being spent annually to eliminate the existing problems, “Alcan’s environmental _ profes- “sionals continue to vigorously seck solutions to those situations Bey which are of concern to the com- pany. Not all are problems for the ministry, but they are well aware of them, because we continuously discuss them with ministry per- . sonnel. Alcan’s concem for the en- vironment is demonstrated in ac- tion, investment and achieve- ment, as the company puts its money where its mouth Is, Rob Brown suggests this aiti- tude should be punished by gZoverment, _: Now that’s crass. (See Brown’s _ definition). Allan Hewitson, Manager, ; Public Relations, : Alcan, Kitimat Works Deficit reduction needed Dear Sir: Tnote in your Nov. 9 article on altitudes towards land claims, there is reference made to a sep- “ment of the population that 4s hostile toward land claim sellle- ment. This calls for comment, While I don’t consider myself hostile toward the selticment, I do have grave misgivings as to the timing of the negotiations. Itis entirely possible we may be committing ourselves to obliga- tions we will be unable to fulfill. Tf our country’s financial state is as bad as our governments indi- cate, then from where will they eo ow X\F obtain the huge cash portion of the eventual settlement, (not to mention the millions being spent on the actual negotiations)? There is only one source, that is the taxpayer. I am retired and have lived almost 70 years in B.C. An inercase in taxes or new taxes would be disastrous ta those on fixed income like mysclf and thousands of others. Both governments have pledged to control the deficit in the foresceable fulure. If they have any likelihood: of success, wouldn't it be prudent to post- pone the negotiations until such before claims are paid time as this has been accomplish- ed? The natives shouldn’t abject to this for two reasons: 1. A considerable portion of the existing deficit consists of monics paid out over the years in support of native programs, _ 2.0 the deficit isn't brought un- der control, in a few years there won’! be cash available for land claims or anything else. Governments should be looking for ways to spend less, not more! Yours truly, K.L. Irwin, Terrace, B.C. Monday......... Shrimp Fettucini $5.95 Tuesday......... Beef Stir Fry $5.95 Wednesday...
