They" ve done it for 26 years City workers get award | AN AWARD has been given to the city workers who act as volunteer weather recorders. The award from Environ- ment Canada is for 26 years of readings collected by workers at the city’s sewage treatment plant, now known as the Pol- lution Control Centre (PCC), Klause Ridke, a city environ- mental health technician, picked up the award recently from Terrace airport weather office manager Dan Morrison. Technicians have been voluntarily recording Ter- race’s weather for Environ- ment Canada since 1968, sending the data to the main weather office in Vancouver for archival use, “This is a fun part of the job,’” said Claude Mercereau who collects the information Court report HERE ARE convictions result- ing from recent cases heard in Terrace provincial court: April 29 Darten Everett Fenton was con- victed of theft under $1,000. City workers have recorded temperatures for nearly three decades and that’s resulted in an award, along with Ridke and Kevin McLeod. ; “Tis a good conversation piece,’ he says. “Your friends say, ‘Boy, it sure rained ‘last night’ and I can say, ‘No it didn’t, it hardly rained at all’,”’ -Ridke feels it also helps them in their job because they know exactly what the water levels should be. “We're in the business of water and waste walter sc it helps to know what’s going on with the weather,”’ said Ridke. ““¥You learn about the weather and follow the trends in the ‘area,’ Bach morning and afternoon for the last 26 years, PCC em- ployees have recorded the minimum and maximum temperatures. The PCC also measures pre- cipitation and rate of rainfall with rain gauges, as well as measuring depth of snowfall on a snowboard, These two stations are needed, said Morrison, be- cause the 500 foot difference between the airport and the control centre makes a sig- nificant difference in weather. “The low-level PCC may get more extreme highs and lows, while the airport gets more snowfall,’ Morrison said. The weather station at the airport runs a much more com- plicated program using satel- lite imagery and hourly obser- vations by meteorologists 24 hours a day, he says.
