Mexico | Ole a FLASH - Mexican food increases in popularity daily in Canada. ° As everyone knows, foods and’ food tastes change periodically, One year is will be German, another Cantonese. or French. Currently the interest and emphasis is on Mexican cuisine, and what an impact Mexican food is having! Asa result of travel to Mexico, Southern California and Texas increasing, consumers teturn home with a desire to prepare Mexican food in thelrown kitcliens. — One of the best known and best liked Mexican foods is Tacos. A Taco shell is a cornmeal tortilla which when fried becomes crisp, and is folded and shaped into an envelope-like shell and thus, they are called the ‘Mexican Sandwich’’. Tacos are usually the first Mexican food pecple taste. Lawry’s Foods of Canada Ltd. have been in the Mexican food business for several years. Recently we have introduced a new addition to this fine line of boxed food products. This new one is called “TACO TRIO” - including !0 Taco Shells, 1 package Taco ‘Seasoning Mix and 2 fail pouches of liquid Mexican ‘Sauce. The Taco Shelts are enriched with iron, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine. Lawry's Taco Seasoning Mix blends onions, cumin, paprika, oregano, garlic and chilies. The Mexican Sauce is .@ seasoned tomato sauce, Available nationally in most supermarkets,‘ retailing at a suggested $1.39 per box, - To prepare a basic Taco: Place about 3 tablespoons of hot seasoned ground becf mixture in each shell, top with shredded lettuce and grated Cheddar Cheese. Top with some of the Mexican Sauce. To prepare adeluxe Taco: As above but include a tomato wedge, a couple of slices of avocado, and some chopped onion. Some people then have the ‘‘courage” to add. a spoonful. of sour cream. The reason I ‘say “courage”, is: because now the fun begins. When eating a Taco, you need a sense of humour and adventure. Open . up wide, take a big bite, try to get some of each flavour - crisp shell, _ hot. . seasoned meat, cold lettuce, smooth mellow cheese, etc. . A recipe which recently came to my attention called SUPPER NACHOS is an interesting variation using the Taco Shells, Taco Seasonifg Mix and Mexican Sauce. This recipe can be used as a new appetizer idea for pre- Christmas entertaining or as a dinner for four on a cold wintery evening. Very easy, very different, very Mexican! Prepare Lawry’s Taco Seasoning Mix according to basic directions. You will have about 2 cups total. Supper Nachos i-16 oz. can refried beans or 1-14 oz. can kidney beans, mashed - i/2 cup finely diced anion 2 cups Lawry's Taco Meat Diced green chiles, optional: i cup grated Cheddar Cheese Tortilla Chips, or Lawry's Taco Shells, broken in bite-sized pieces Garnishes: Avocado slices or guacamole Dairy Sour Cream Chopped green onion, - including tops — Chopped tamato Sliced ripe olives Mexican Sauce In the bottom of a 10x8- inch shallow oven-proof serving dish, spread the refried beans or baked beans, Sprinkle onions over beans arid top with Taco Meat and diced green chiles, if desired.
