JERUSALEM (Reuter) —
In the early days of Israel
there was no point in
struggling to keep up with
the local equivalent of the
Joneses.

Chances were that one
man had nothing much more
than his neighbors. For
nearly everybody the first
years of statehoob meant
hard work, constant danger
and scant comfort.
