King of Kensington, last
season’s comedy hit returns
to CBC-TV Tuesday, Sep-
tember 21 at 8:30 p.m. — for
the first time on the full
network. .  — .

Waxman stars as Larry
King, proprietor of a variety
store in Kensington, the
cultural mosaic of Toronto.
The store poses no threat to
Eaton’s. Its inventory in-
cludes a gross of fahrenheit
thermometers -and 4
shipment of hula-hoops,

_very dusty. But King’s

Variety never lacks for
customers. They come in to
gossip, grumble, kibitz....

-and ask for credit.

Abdve the store, King
lives as peacefully as he can
with two. women — his wife
Cathy (Fiona Reid) and his

mother’ Gladys (Helene ,

Winston).

- For Cathy, loving King
meant conquering the
distance from her roots in
suburbia to the ‘ethnic
checkerboard — of _Ken-

sington. Happily, living with,
Larry has saved her from a
life of luxury.

For Gladys, her son is ...

well, her son. Not a doctor or .

a dentist, maybe, but then,
not a politician either.
Behind the store is The
Club — the preserve where
King and his friends
gamble, gab, drink coffee
and eat doughnuts. This
pleasure-den is run by Max
(John J. Dee), a 65 year-old
innocent. Regular bettors
include Duke (Bob . Vinci)
and Nestor (Ardon_ Bess).
The Duke drives a cab when
he’s not winning at cards or
at the track. Duke’s brother
drives when he is winning.
-Duke’s brother has never

Malcolm Mitchell has -
captured in his book, A
Touch of Grey, the lighter
side of growing old. He
recounts numerous anec-
dotes both witty and wise

- extracted from many inter-

views with the over-sixty
generation. Laughing with
and not at the elderly he
paints an entertaining pic-
ture of their lives. He has
chosen to emphasize what
he considers to be typical
amongst the elderly, those
who pushing ninety, look
sixty and are “full of en-
thusiasm, charm and wit.”

The mythology of ageing .
dictates that one will have
unlimited leisure time. As
one youngster put it “it's a
time when all you do each
day is play”. Mr. Mitchell

devotes a chapter to this
aspect of the retirement |
years, however, in chapters, |
entitled Anchors Away and
Dollars and Sense he con- -
siders the practical aspects
of old age; mobility, and
money (or lack of it). The
ingenious manner in which
our senior citizens navigate .
their way through everyday —
life with the burden of
failing ‘health and finances
is fascinating reading. One
thing that does not seem to
be failing is a sense of -
humour. _
