Labor pressure
can upset Dief’s

When Conservative MPs met in caucus recently they were in no doubt as to ‘labor’s

In the second week of our
annual subscriptio drive - for
1,200 new subs and renewals,
the scoreboard in. our office
shows a total of 175 subs
turned in; 84 from Greater
Vancouver and 91 from pro-
vincial points

The task facing our sup-
porters and press club mem-
bers is to get out and meet
more potential readers. Once
you see the people, signing
them. up isn’t so difficult.

Twelfth provincial conven-
tion of the Labor-Progressive
party will be opened by Tim
Buck, LPP national leader,
when he addresses a_ public
meeting in Pender Auditor-
ium this Friday, September
27 at 8 p.m. The meeting will
be Buck’s only pubile appear=-
ance in Vancouver during his
present visit to this province.

Immediately following the
weekend convention Buck
will address a number of
meetings in the Fraser Valley
and on Vancouver Island, be-
fore returning to the prairie
provinces on his way east.

His itinerary includes:

Tuesday, October 2, Ken-
nedy Hall in North Surrey;

Wednesday, October 3, Eagles
Hall, Nanaimo; Thursday,
October 4, Eric Graf Hall,
Port Alberni; Friday, October
5, Newstead Hall, Victoria.

A change in Buck’s travel
schedule forced cancellation
of previously planned meetigs
in Kamloops, Vernon and
Trail.

Main report at the LPP con-
vention will be given Satur-
day morning by Nigel Mor-
gan, provincial leader, and
sessions ‘will continue through-
out Saturday and Sunday.

Some 100 delegates are ex-
pected from Greater Vancou-
ver, the Fraser Valley, Van-
couver Island and Interior
centres.

Parliament opens October 14
and Canadians will then know
what the new Tory govern-
ment plans to do about its
election promises.

Meanwhile, John Diefen-
baker, closely counselled by
highly-paid advertising execu-
tives, is already fighting the
next election from his van-
tage point as first minister.

His strategy seems to be jel-
ling — to take - “initiative”
on minor questions and’ travel
extensively while leaving the
main problem untouched.

Some things are apparent
already. Diefenbaker is riding
high for aman who leads the
first minority government Can-
ada has had in over 30 years
Speaking to a Conservative
convention at Charlottetown,
he served notice that this
party “did not intend to be
pushed around. by the opposi-
tion parties in the Commons.”

He does not intend to be
pushed around by the ma-
jority of the Canadian people
who voted for the majority of
MP’s opposed to his party!
Strange talk from a man who
had so much to Say a few
short months ago about the
“supremacy of parliament!”

Diefenbaker figures he is
Sitting quite safe. Social Credit
has virtually promised him
Support. Liberals do not want
an election before they can
choose a new leader and patch
up their fences. The CCF is
Supposed to be unable to
finance another election.
Therefore, according to the
Diefenbaker theory no one
will want to “rock the boat”
and force an early election.

The Tories will be free to
introduce a few popular vote-
getting measures, bide their
time on all fundamental prob-
lems, call an election on their
own terms and their own tim-
ing in which they will hope
to consolidate their majority.
