REPORTS — ~ PRESIDENTS REPORT Firstly, I would like to thank those members of the Board of Directors who are retiring this year. This past board has worked extremely hard and long and introduced many progressive changes of policy and direction. As well I take this opportunity to thank Oliver, Maria, Jack and Jeanne for the hard work they contributed to the Guild during our subsidized proaram which ends Dec.19th. Numerous improvements were made to our facility, day to day staffing was carried out, and a framework established and financing secured for important events for 1987. My most sincere thanks to the many individuals who have contributed so much this vear. ‘Special thanks oes to Mr. Hiro Urakami who has made a tremendous contribution as curator of the Gallery in our first year and who is leaving in January for at least a one year break. Arrangements are now beina finalized for our clay conference "Speaking in Clay, Speakina of Clay" (April 11-12). I am very thrilled as President to further announce a Guild sponsored Major Exhibition in conjunction with the conference for 1987. After much negotiation with galleries and curators we have reached agreement with Mr. Holmes of Emily Carr Collece, that he curate an exhibition in the Charles H. Scott Gallery for the Guild. Mr. Holmes will investigate the special properties of clay (as outlined for our conference) and will blend together historic, mandfactured and contemoorary B.C. ceramics which speak of the inherent properties of clay. Mr. Holmes is very respected in the Museum world and we are certainly priveleged to have his cooperation. The exhibition will run April 3rd to April 26th and is complimented by a ceramic student exhibition in E.C.C.A.0. at the same time, with our conference hosted at the school as well. The Canada Council, Province of B.C., Charles 4, Scott Gallery and £.C.C.A.D. are all contributing to the financing of what will be 4 major ceramic event. Our Guild will not be burdened by a large financial commitement. A curated exhibition in a recognized pub ye art gallery is an important achievement for the development of a professiénal organization. Much work remains so please come forth if your interested in involvement with these events. A further benefit from our work project is a quality brochure promoting the Guild and Gallery. Copies are available in the Gallery and are being sent to out-of-town members. The brochure contains several photos of ceramic artist represented in the Gallery and will likely ba updated with new photos at the end of next year. Many thanks to Martha Melling and Oliver for spending so much effort on this project. My final comment concerns our election in January. I strongly urge all members to attend and vote. As our oraanization crows so do the political ramifications and problems. Our annual budget this past year jumped to $100,000.00 up from a usual $7,000.00, fisat of this money has been paid out to potters and employees) and next year promises to be equally as demanding, This amount of work requires an immense amount of commitment and we need your moral support. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All: Sincerly, David Zawaduk
