~ Child car. seat clinic: belts ’ em in tight TERRACE _ People’ ‘living in .the area covered by the Skeena Health Unit don’t use infant and child car seats as much as they should, so Health Unit worker Lynn Lalonde, with help from. “ ICBC, decided to raise the aware- . ness of motoring parents in the Terrace area, Last Saturday Lalonde and other Health Unit personnel, backed up by Thornhill Junior Secondary CounterAttack students, offered a free clinic to show people how to | secure their kids safely in a mov- ing vehicle. The clinic, held at the Terrace ICBC claims office on Highway 16, checked 35 cars and pickup trucks. Statistics show that car seat use _ in the Skeena region is about 10 percent lower than the provincial average, In view of that, Lalonde said Saturday’s turnout of con- cemed parents was higher than she expected. Of the 35 seats checked in the clinic, about 40 percent of | them were not correctly installed. The installation is important for the child’s safety, she said. Parents seem to have particular problems with the child safety seat, the model designed for kids weighing between 20 and 40 pounds. The belts holding the seat in place have to be bolted into the frame of the car like the factory-installed seat belts, a fact that many parents who buy them don’t realize. The Terrace area group did well, Lalonde said, with only two seats ‘that’ didn't comply with regula- tions. The biggest problems were seats lacking chest clips and lack of proper adjustment, with the belt not firmly holding the child. Death in automobile accidents is the single biggest killer of Cana- dian children. ICBC statistics show that 40 infants were killed and over 2,000 injured in B.C. traffic accidents during the two- year period from 1981 to 1983. Un- restrained children themselves are often the cause of the accidents: over a five-year period in B.C. 554 collisions were directly caused by kids roaming around inside the vehicle. Anyone who missed the Saturday _ Clinic can pick up information on correct installation and use of car seats from the Skeena Health Unit. Lalonde gave the Terrace Co-op part of the credit for the success of the clinic. They provided car seats for the organizers’ training session and donated the door prize, a Fisher-Price infant carrier won by Thornhill ‘resident .Shirley Pala- hicky.
