te 14 : Terrace Review — Wednesday, April 6, 1988 | "Midget “AAA” hockey finals — ..- continued from page 13 This put Terrace in the cellar against Dawson Creek on the final day, while Nelson would take on Victoria in the contest for third-place finishers. The final two games of day three were semi-finals to deter- mine finalists for the following night. The games really weren’t that close, as North Shore and Prince George proved they were the cream of the crop. The first matchup had North Shore beat Kamloops 7-3 in a game that had just about everything in penalties, in- cluding several in the un- necessary category. Kamloops had one player bounced on a match penalty for a butt-end. When they lost a player on a five-minute major, North Shore responded with _ three goals in the short-handed situation. Bach team also had a miscon- duct penalty, and North Shore added 15 of the game’s 26 minors to their total. As for the good side, which is scoring goals, North Shore’s Jason Jennings hit for a pair while his team’s other goals went to Mark Kaufman, Andrew Wilson, Derek Lee, Ken Camp- bell and Brad Kyllo. Davis Payne, Sean Nolan and Todd Esselmont responded for Kamloops. This one put North Shore into the big game and relegated Kamloops into a playoff for third and fourth places. Prince George, the speediest team in the series, checked close and hit hard as they knocked off Surrey 7-3. The George gang went up 3-0 in the first and 4-1 in the second. They also got fingered for 11 of the 18 minor penalties called. Surrey got the game’s only ‘misconduct, Curtis Head topped the scor- ing with a pair, Jason Van- buskirk, Brad Smith, Ernie Boudrault,, Garry Vallentgoed and Troy Johnson got the other Prince George markers. For Surrey it was Craig Johnson, Bill MacGillivray, and Scott McGeachy. The result partnered Surrey with Terrace for the next day’s final games. They’d play for seventh and eighth spots. Prince George moved ahead to the final which promised to be a thriller. Terrace failed to avoid the humiliation of placing last by losing their playoff game against Dawson Creek. The northeast- ers’ 4-2 win gave them seventh place and relegated Terrace to eighth and last with a four-game winless record. Terrace was in the game up to the end, It was 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after the second. Then with two minutes, 33 seconds to go in the last period, Dawson Creek got a goal from Jason Rand. Scott Rattray add- ed an insurance marker with one minute, 16 seconds to, go and that was it. The game ended on a high note for fans, but a low note for the teams. Tempers flared at the final buzzer and fisticuffs en- sued. . When the windup battle was over, Terrace had one minor penalty, two fight majors and two game misconducts. Dawson Creek had the same, except no minor. Earlier, both teams recorded fighting majors, plus nine minors for Terrace and eight for Dawson. Koyne Loyselle paced the win- ners with two goals, while Mitch Shinde scored both for Terrace. The trading of goals in the third period gave fans their best game of the day in the playoff for fifth and sixth between Nelson and Victoria. Nelson finally came out on top when Dale Bonderud broke a 6-6 tie with 25 seconds left ona power-play goal. That gave Nelson the victory over the Van- couver Island champs. Victoria held the lead until the see-saw third. Victoria was up 2-1 in the first and 3-2 in the se- cond. Other goal-scorers for Nelson were Mike Laughton with two and Dwayne Dergousoff, Jason Ward, Brian Boates and Rick Lindstein with one each. Dale Walsh led Victoria with a pair. Lorne Hadley, Leroy Wade, Doug Popadynee and Jim Hatcher also scored. It was a penalty-filled chippy contest with 32 minors called, including 17 against Victoria. Victoria also had a misconduct - -and game misconduct. The Kamloops — Surrey bat- tle for third and fourth was somewhat less than thrilling, with the lower mainlanders pull- ing off a 5-2 win over the Okanagan mainline reps. - It was 2-1 for Surrey in the first and 4-2 for Surrey in the se- cond, Penalty-wise, Surrey had only nine of the 23 minors call- ed, Ryan Seidler paced the win- ners with a two-goal effort. Scott McGeachy, Chris Fallis and Craig Johnson padded out their scoring. Todd Esselmont and Davis Payne scored for Kamloops. Kamloops had gone into the series as a favored team, but could only muster a two-win, two-loss record. Arts Council requests grant boost The city’s Finance Committee is taking a look at a request fora 10 percent increase in the city’s annual grant to the Terrace and District Arts Council. The re- quest was filed by president Eileen Kennedy. In her letter, Kennedy wrote, “The $6,000 grant we received last year was very much ap- preciated. We would like to thank you for your continued support, without it we would not have the diversification of art events in our City.” She pointed out however, “We have not had an increase in funding for several years, and at this time we would like to ask you to consider an increase of 10 percent, raising our grant from - $6,000 to $6,600.” According to Kennedy, the purpose of the TDCA is to pro- mote and develop visual and Li Cheque Name O11 year — $24.00 C Money Order Please send a subscription to: and performing arts in the com- munity by supporting arts groups within the community and promoting additional ac- tivities not provided by their member groups.
