PAGE 8, THE HERALD, Wednesday, September 13, 1978 Referendum on death penalty TORONTO (CP) — The Globe and Mail says Otto Lang, federal minister of transport and justice, wants the federal government to hold a referendum on capital punishment. In a copyright report, the newspaper quotes Lang as saying he still opposes capital punishment but wants the question settled finally to the satisfaction of the Canadian public. In April, a Gallup poll showed 82 per cent of Canadians want a referendum on capital punishment. The poll showed 68 per cent want a return of capital punishment, abolished Iwo years aga by a slim margin in a [ree vote. The newspaper quotes Lang as saying the public does nol seem satisfied with the way the capital punish- ment question was resolved in the Commons and thal the public sees parliamentary debate as being influenced by partisan considcrations. The minister also is quoted as saying that possible erosion of respect for the law is his concern, not the death penalty, and he has not seen evidence, such as increasing violence, that would lead him to believe capital punishment should be re- turned. The Globe and Mail says Lang refused lo comment on whether the matter has been raised in cabinet. The newspaper quoles some Liberal back-benchers as saying the minister has approached them on the subject. Allan Evelyn, president of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Association, is quoted as saying that any move by the Liberal party to reopen the issue of capilal punish- ment in any farm would be “just a vole-getting plan.” DECORATOR APPLIANCE...the “Dish » Potwasher™ from Holpaet has 11 cycles, 1s hea iy sound insulated, ane comes as shown with tempered black glass front panels or wih re- varsible color panels in Avacarlo. Van Buren % 1978 by Chicago Tnbune. NY. Nows Synd. Inc, DEAR ABBY: I read so many letters about, cheating husbands, ] wonder if anyone ever wonders how they got that way. Well, here is MY day: 1 go to the breakfast table to find my usual bow! of cold cereal and instant coffee. (No toast; we're out of bread.} My wife, who went from 120 to 180 pounds in two years, joins me in a soiled bathrobe, pinned together because she's heen to busy watching soap operas and talking on the telephone to sew on buttons. ; I'm wearing the same shirt I wore yesterday because she didn't have time to iron. (I couldn't even match up a pair of socks this morning.) . It's only 7:30 a.m. and I'm already disgusted and irritable before going to work as a supervisor in a noisy office. When I return home at 5:15 p.m. I find our 2-year-old still in his pajamas, and my wife is wearing the same soiled robe. The breakfast dishes are in the sink, and I notice an empty une-pound box of chocolates and a half-eaten pie by the TV. When I'm about ready to go lo the nearest McDonald's, she tells me “dinner is ready.” (“Dinner” is canned spaghetti, instant potatoes and a tossed salad that should have been tossed into the garbage.) ; Two years ago, she quit work to have our baby, saying she'd return to work when the baby was a year old. Obviously, she has no intention of going back. No matter how late I stay up, I] go to bed alone because she wants to watch more television. Would you blame me if I starled looking for a woman wha cares how she looks, and offers me some pleasant conversa- tion, companionship and a little affection? So far, I haven't. bul I'm considering it. I'd be better off being a bachdlor, eating out, and sending my clothes to a laundry, Al least, 'd have good food, clean elothes and warm arms, and it would be cheaper than keeping a worthless woman. DISGUSTED IN BLOOMINGTON DEAR DISGUSTED: Obviously, your wife is not the game woman you married. But why are you telling ME all this? Do you want to improve the situation, or set up some justification for cheating on her? Has it ever occurred to you that your wile may have become lazy, slovenly and addicted to food and television because she's sick? Before you write her off as a “worthless woman,’ try tof find the reason for her apparent deterioration. With loving concern instead of criticism, plus professional help (starting with a physician) you might be able to save her. It’s certain- ly worth a try. DEAR ABBY: If you knew for a fact that your sister's hus- band had been keeping another woman [or over five years, would you tell your sister? Many others know il. My sister is bound Lo find oul some way, and when she does, she will surely realize that I must have known it, too, LONG ISLANDER DEAR ISLANDER: There are exceptions, but in most cases, the wife also knows, but has too much pride to admit it to anyone. Keep your lip zipped, and should she one day admit that she knows, please be big and don't chime in with those who would say, “I knew it all along.” If you put off writing letters because you don't know what to say, get Abby's booklet, “How to Write Letters J For All Occasions.” Send $1 and a long, stamped (28 cents) envelope to Abby: 132 Lasky Drive, Beverly Hills, Calif. 90212.
