In the Lakota way of life a braid of sweetgrass is one of the sacred elements of prayer and ceremonial practices. Performance artist Dana Claxton weaves bear grass in the performance as the sounds of voices, waterdrums and gourds contribute to a compelling meditative element throughout. Dana Claxton An interdisciplinary artist in film, video, photography and performance art, whose artwork has been shown in Canada and the United Sates. Her installation works are held in the permanent collections of the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the MacKenzie Art Gallery. Ms. Claxton is the winner of the 2001 VIVA Award, given each year by the Vancouver Institute of Visual Arts. Music Peyote singers Verdell Primeaux and Johnny Mike of the Native American Church. Essay Dr. Bea Medicine, Lakota elder and internationally known anthropologist, contributes an essay on the Lakota view of art and artistic expression. Dr. Medicine is a Professor of Anthropology and Native Studies at Brandon University and Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the California State University in Northridge.
