WITH ITS pretty white lights and deli- cate decorations, it looks like any other Christmas tree in the bustling shopping mall at this time of year. But take a closer look, The ornaments are paper snowflakes. Each carries the name of someone who has passed away — and is missed, often terribly, by their loved ones, particularly at this time of year, when holiday cheer provides a sharp contrast to what’s been lost. The Christmas season can be an inten- sely painful lime for those who are priey- ing. That’s why each December, the Ter- race Hospice Saciety hosts the Celebrate a Life Ceremony. ; The evening, which took place this year on Dec. 10 at the Elk’s Hall, is a Christmas memorial honouring: the life and memory of a loved one who has pas- sed away. There’s a non-denominational service and candle-lighting ceremony in remembrance. ; Its a place for people to come tape- ther with other members of the commun- ity who understand exactly whal they’re going through. This year people shared memories and listened to seasonal music performed by local musicians, says Deirdre McEwan of the hospice society. “People connect. It was holy, almost, because there was so much love there.” The evening gives people an opportun- ity to remember that the greatest gift ihey’ve received is lave, McEwan says. “That's what Christmas is all about,” she says. “Yes, there’s sadness, there’s tears. But there’s also a celebration.” The ceremony is followed by refresh- meats and fellowship. A Christmas de- corated with cards carrying the names re- membering people is later moved to the Skeena Mall. Passersby are invited to add the names af their own loved ones to the tree. They’re also welcome to lake pamphlets that offer families practical suggestions on hew to cope during the Christmas sea- son when they’re grieving. Grieving people are advised to decide what they can handle comfortably and make their needs known to family and friends. The Terrace Hospice Society offers grief support. It also has an extensive lending li- brary, and provides “care notes” covering every aspect of loss and grief, including how to cope during special occasions like Christmas and anniversaries. The office is open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. For more informa- tion, cali 635-4811.
