B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 24, 1996 A trip back to the past HERITAGE PARK keeps drawing many interesting visitors from near and far. A few wecks ago we were honoured to have as our guest Mary Benesh from Victoria and her son Edward from Kamloops, These guests were special because they come from one of the earliest pioneering families in the Skeena Val- ley. Back in the early 1900s Mary’s father William West was one the very first pioneers in the area. In 1906 Billy West pre- empted the land where Ter- raceview Lodge = and Heritage Park are today, Tt was here that Billy started the first dairy in the area, called Morning Side Dairy. Billy had immigrated to Canada from England with his parents. After a stay in Guelf, Ontario the family moved onto Duncan, BC. When he grew older Billy first visited the Skeena Val- ley on a trip by riverboat. He was one of the men hired to work on the government telegraph line through to Aiyansh. HERE “N. THERE- YVONNE MOEN While be was in Terrace he met his wife to be — Lil- lian Hennah. Lillian had come to’ Terrace to visit Reverend Marsh and his wife. At the time of Mary’s birth, Lillian had to travel by train to the Prince Rupert Hospital. There was no hos- pital in Terrace back then. She said they worked very ‘hard and grew a large gar- den. They alsa planted many fruit trees on the pench, some of which are slill producing fruit today. Mary told us stories about chasing the catile, or how her father delivered milk by horse and wagon. He used ice to keep the milk cold. Mary’s mother passed away in 1934, Two years later Billy decided to move to Victoria with Mary. While they were in the city they met up with Frank Morris, an architect who wanled to come ta Terrace to live, So Billy West and Frank Morris made a deal to swap property, and Mary left Ter- race behind. This latest visit back was full of memories for her. Mary and her son Edward weit to take pictures of the old home she lived in at the commer of Westview and Hillcrest. Some of the fruit trees they planted are siill there. We had a lovely lime listening to Mary’s stories. She and many other pioneers have so many fond memories of their time in Terrace, So we say thanks for the great contribution and for helping to make Terrace the town we enjoy so much today.
