Sockeye pink and steelhead up in Skeena -Terrace— This year the run of Skeena River sockeye is about one- third as large as fore- casted, by Philip Musselman The sockeye run, which was forecasted at about 2.8 to 3 million fish has only come to about 1.2 to 1.4 million thus far, According to Les Jantz, the Skeena and Nass Management Biologist, the smaller number of sockeye was replaced by a larger run of pink salmon. The run of pinks which was sup- posed to be about 2.4 million has increased to over 2.8 million. In July there were seven days of commer- cial openings and in Aug. there. was an in- crease to 14 days of openings. The depart- ment expects no further openings for September. For sportfishing, the chinook salmon return was a very large one, but -the coho run, up to this point, has been very ‘poor. Jantz expects an arrival of stronger coho runs later in September. This year has seen a great steelhead return which is now recorded as the second best on record, Last year the steelhead run was the third best on record, but that has been altered by this year’s return. Fire report On Saturday, Sept. 13 at approximately 8:34 p.m, the Terrace fire department, the Thorn- hill volunteer firefighters and a helicopter worked together to put out a blazing pile of logs just beside the Skeena River bridge. The fire, endangering the two bridges, burnt many of the cable lines above it, leaving most of the Thornhill area without cablevision and telephone. In some parts, hydro was also af- fected. At 2:45 a.m. the fire was finally brought under control, allowing the last fire truck to leave the burn site. * ek On Saturday, Sept. 13 the Terrace fire depart- ment attended a garbage can fire behind Sundance Ski & Sports Ltd. . The $5.4 million for renovations at Skeena Junior Secon- dary in the draft plan was increased by another $2 million to provide for replacement of the aging building instead of restoration. In putting forward the motion to increase the expenditure, trustee Dave Parker remarked that he would prefer to see $7.4 million spent for a new building with a life of 40 years in preference to spending $5.4 million ' On renovating a structure with a projected life of 20 years. Howard said, ‘‘A few years ago, when the two- mile school was closed, a strong sentiment developed for the forma- tion of a School District for the Hazelton area, However, the feeling ob- viosly wasn’t strong enough for an organiza- tion to be developed to pursue the question.’’ “The proposal for a Hazelton area School District reflects a desire GEEN IMPEACHED.
