Building at the PNE in Vancouver resounded with stories and tales, reminiscences of school days, of childhood and of growing up, which all of us had experienced in the small community of Prince Rupert some four and five de- cades ago. I youchsafe to say that only once in a lifetime, — and then only if you are lucky ~— do you experience the thrill! To me it wag like being part of a dream. When I entered the large auditorium at the PNE, crowded f! with people, my heart almost stoof still. Eyerywhere I looked in that first - glance, sea-of-faces, were friends whom I had not seen in y|many, many years. Believe me it was a breath-taking sensation. One didn’t know whom to greet first. Up until 17 years ago when I came to Terrace with the “Herald” J lived in Prince Rupert — taking all my schooling there and start- ing ag a newspaper woman at the age of 17. (Did I say time was quickly passing?) The astonishing part of the gala reunion was that not one of us cared two hoots how old we were, how many husbands we'd gone through, how many grandchildren and great grandchildren we had, how grey or tinted was our hair! It was “remember when” — and off we'd go! _T travelled south with a busload of forty happy old-timers (and some of them not so old) from the coast city, who had decided to attend this 10th annual get-togeth- er of Rupertites who had left for southern climes. It was soon quite evident their “whole being’ had not left the northern fishing port — their hearts were in their eyes as they greeted old friends. One “grandmother” was heard to ex- claim with ecstacy: “It was a grand reunion of our grade eight class!” For me, memory went back to the first grade — at one period in the evening the camera caught five of us at one table — girls who had gone all through school to- gether. Oh, how the tongues wag- ged. I was almost floored when I saw my “first daby-sitter,” and I MEAN she used-to keep ME from crying Taking a Look “RUPERT NIGHT” — OLD MEMORIES REVIVED Who says a reunion isn’t fun, —~ despite the nudging | apprehension that time has been passing quickly! I attend- the 10th annual ‘Rupert Night’ in Vancouver last week, when literafly six hundred people laughed and wept and spent a dozen exciting hours greeting friends, — friends who had, for them, come to life after twenty, thirty, forty years. oem Wednesday, April 13, ved Pach in the dark when my mother and father went out. At another point in the excit- ment I was greeted by two dis- tinguished gentlemen — they were newsboys to whom I had counted aut Daily News in my ap- prentice days, One of the biggest thrills of the evening was when a petite “still young looking grandmother” threw her arms around me and said “Cathie I have never forgotten how you loaned me two dollars when I was coming home broke from Vancouver.” it appeared — she recalled to me — it happened away back in the “hungry thirties,’ and she said “I remember I was a proud girl — just like my father — and you handed me the $2 without batting an eye.” I ‘hadnt remembered the inci- dent — and through her tears she told me that for all these years I have remained one of her best friends, although E never once heard from her, And so all too soon the happy reunion came to an end, and we all went our separate ways, But our paths had crossed again in this brief interlude — and an- other memory was tucked away, to be recalled on those inevitable days when one can stand a “lift.” Seeks Information Of Early Paper For years the provincial library has known of the existence of an early Bulkley Valley newspaper, The Hubert Times and Bulkley Valley Advertiser, but no files had survived. Just recently a sin- gle issue, Volume 1, No. 28, ussued May 13, 1914, has been presented to the library. For the boom days in the Bulkley Valley it has many interesting pieces of information and leads one to wonder where are the other issues? Mr. Willard Ireland, Provincial Librarian and Archivist, asks the question. He would appreciate re- ceiving an issue either to retain Permanently or to borrow long enough to have it microfilmed. Mr. Ireland can be contacted at the Provincial Library in Victorla. Fred Adames Gets\i Red Cross Award |@ Mr. Fred H.
