opper Mountain School’s sports day | SPORTS i yee ams ~ COMMENT “by Rou Bolleau An announcement was made at the recent National Hockey League meetings in Montreal, that there are to be three new members of the NHL Hall of Fame. Harry Howell, a former New York Ranger defen- ceman laboured through twenty-one seasons and finally retired in 1973. Howell played 1411 games and was an excellent defensive defenceman, not to be confused with the offensive defenceman of today's game. He was selected as an Allstar only once, in 1964 67, when he also-won the James Norris trophy as the league's top defenceman, Howell still has three Ranger club records; the moat seasons played, the most games played, and the moat eareer minutea in penalties. Harry Howell went through moat of his career almost unnoticed. It’s good that the Hall of Fame committee recognized his value to the sport. _ - The. second newly elected member was the Canadiens star: center Henrl “Pocket Rocket" Richard. The Pocket played twenty seasons with the Habs and scored 358 goals while assisting on 683 others. He retired in 1975, but not before being placed. on the First Allstar team once and the second team three times, winning the Bill Masterton trophy in 1974, and helping Monteal to eleven Stanley Cup victories. ‘Pocket started out as a rookie playing between his brother Maurice .“Rocket” Richard on right wing an¢ Dickie Moore on the left side. The line was an instant success and helped the Canadiens to five straight Stanley Cups, 1965-56 through 1959-60. The Rocket retired in 1960. . An interesting side light to the brother act was the hope of the youngest of the Richard brothers, Claude, in making it with the Canadiens, The Montreal press had already nicknamed him ‘The Vest-Pocket- Rocket--.However, the: dimminutive Claude never made it past Monteal’s junior farm team, the Ottawa- Hull Junior Canadiens. . The Hall of Fame committee made another ex- cellent choice in selecting Henri Richard, Richard presently owns and operates a bar in Montreal and is quite willing to do some reminiscing over a nip or two _ 4£ you are ever in the area. - ot . The third and Jast entry to the Hall was a young fallow of 31 years of age. The youngest in the Hall of Fame and maybe the most deserving. He changed the style of NHL hockey, discovering a new weapon; the offensive defenceman. Robert Gordon Orr rewrote nearly every NHL record and. won every honour a _ + Inhis short 9 year history he was selected to the firat Allstar team 8 times and the second team one.
